I have a little CZ 452 .22 lr, that needs a scope. I can't decide between a 2.5X20 Leupold & Stevens Heavy Duplex and a similar Leupold model in 4X. I can't think when more than 2X would be needed on a rifle for the odd Squirrel, Grackles, Polecat etc.

But, before I buy one, I need a sanity check.

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.

Hard to beat a straight 4 power for all around use. I don't think you need a heavy duplex, the standard one will suffice. Most of my 22s carry 2x7 Leupold Rim Fire scopes or Burris 4x12 Compacts, find that most of the time they stay on 4X.

The Leupold 4X rimfire is hard to beat. A variable is not needed for a .22.

I'm with the others on the 4X. Even that is none to much for old eyes. I use a Leupold 6.5-20 on my .17 HMR, for prairie rats and mostly leave it on 20 for 100 yds. plus. I also have a VXII 2-7X33 Leupold that is very handy. I changed the parallax distance to 75 yds. I might sell it, if you're interested. It's not on a rifle right now. I have a Leupold 3-9 EFR on my Kimber .22. Great scope!

I keep a Leupold 2-7X33 on my Ruger 10/22, would not want anything else on it.

Maybe it is me. But I have never been able to see the wisdom in mounting a $200-$300 piece of glass on a $340 gun.

I would put a 3-9X40 Tasco World Class for $45.00 at Cabelas and call it a day.

I mean, it is not like a squirrel can out run a bullet!

When it comes to a scope for a .22, assuming you will be squirel hunting in deep woods, the quality of the optics for light gathering and clarity are about as important as magnification, I have a 3X9 Burris on my 10-22 and have never looked back to the Tasco that was on it.

Yeah, Pete, it's just you.

PO, get the 4X or a 2x7X.
