Well Yes of course one could just size the muzzle of the hull. If you've got the lathe though & are going to make one on it why not take a bit more time & make a full length one that'll do anything it might ever be called upon to do. You're only going to need it if you change guns to one with a smaller chamber size or if the hulls are damaged. Who's to say just where that damage may occur. I am also of the school that thinks the least amount you can work the brass the better, therefore am thoroughly convinced this is the ideal way to go. I don't have the specs on a 14 ga chamber but am guessing somewhere around .690"/.693" for the forward end next to the cone & about .702"/.705" at the breech.
If a brass case needs sizing at all it may need more sized than just the muzzle. No I have not tried using just a ring on an all brass case & No I don't intend to. This is of course all my opinion & it didn't cost anything so take it for whatever its worth to you.

I've got a bit of an update. I went ahead and shot them to see if it helped. Mostly because that was the option that included smoke. I had to help them in the chamber but it was all by hand - no hammers etc. It closed hard a couple times, but extraction was MUCH easier. They must have been out of round from the vibe is all I can figure. I can still see a noticeable bulge near the front of the cases and will be sizing them back before any real hunting. I don't have my calipers handy to check dims but will report back with specifics.

If I had this to do all over I might have bought RMC brass to start with, but look at the fun I would have missed. I wanted ~50 cases and started with the old greener police gun brass because I found some for cheap then kept adding more, before I knew it I had too many (too many dollars invested) to change over to RMC. The RMC brass takes true gauge size wads like a muzzle loader and the thin walled drawn stuff takes one size up - just didn't want to have to keep 2 sizes of components.

Light use just a few I would go with something home made. Drilled out nut. Advantage of a ring sizer is much easier to make, look at Mec 600 presses, ring sizes. Proper tapered die is a job for a good machinist. Over my head.

Good thing to have is a plug expander also home made. Not all brass problems are cured sizing outside. Easy to make out of a bolt.

Use Imperial sizing wax makes things easy.
