I look at a lot of vintage hunting photos, in the past I would pass on photos of old sporters to MP in the chance he might recognize a maker and want to add it to his collection. Now Ill post them here for fun. This one looks like a nice rifle. Double triggers made me think Mauser. ebay link

I am not sure I see double sets. The other rifle looks like an 1890 Winchester .22. I wonder what these guys were doing with a largish centerfire and a .22 and a gold pan.

They are obviously double sets, and that might be Paul Newman on the right...

If that is Paul Newman, he would be 110 yrs old now. And NOT an ex movie star. I can see the backtrigger now. wasn't able to zoom in earlier.

I agree with RHD45, looks like a Newton, to me.
Great old photo.
But if it is a Newton, it must be a few years later than the seller thinks....

I'll side on the team who thinks it's a Newton.
The guy on the right looks like William Bendix to me. ("Life of Reilly")

I think Newton also. But that makes the photo WW1 at the earliest & could even be as late as Depression-era.

I think Newton also. But that makes the photo WW1 at the earliest & could even be as late as Depression-era. Newtons were made before World War I. This one appears to have the cocking piece aperture rear sight. I think it is somewhat of an assumption to conclude that the individuals pictured are gold miners just because one is holding a pan which might be used for panning gold. A Newton rifle was not an inexpensive item and would much more likely be found in the hands of a well-to-do hunter "roughing it" on a hunting trip. Binoculars are more suited to hunting than panning gold. The individual on the right would look perfectly at home in a three piece suit.
