I am going to be selling some double guns and need a good scale to get accurate weights. I looked at some produce and hardware scales on ebay and there is a lot of variety. I would appreciate suggestions based on your experience. Thanks, Ross

We found a used postal scale at a swap shop. Works well.

When I am going around auctions or shops etc getting weights I carry a set of fishing scales; just hook the gun through the trigger guard and there you have it - you don't really need to weigh guns to the nearest 1/4 oz.

I got one of those Rapala digital fish scales.
I have compared it with the local grocery scales and it's dead on to the ounce. It goes up to fifty pounds and a nine volt battery seems to last forever.

I also use a digital fish scale, I have found however that when hooking through the triggerguard you will not get an accurate reading as that usually causes the triggerguard or possibly the side of the buttstock to contact the side of the scale.If you take the gun apart and weigh the stock and action and barrels seperately, this usually solves the problem.Also I checked my weights against a certified scale and it weighs right on. My scale is a Rapala also.

I also use a postal scale, but the hanging method sounds as though it would work just as well. On a side note, I saw that Holland & Holland check trigger pulls with actual iron weights, not a pull guage like most of us have. They keep adding and subtracting small circular weights until they find the right amount. I know its not a bid deal, but I like seeing old world traditions still in use today.

Rudy, a 10" piece of rawhide with a loop on each end does the trick. Just put it around the break in the gun while opened and right-side up. You can tare the scale with the rawhide on the hook, first.

I use an electronic kitchen scale, registering up to 7 lbs and accurate to 1/10 oz. For guns over that mark, just disassemble, weigh the parts and add 'em up.
