I'm no expert on stock bending so I have to ask, what's the chance of the "hot oil" soaking into the wood from the inlet area and surfacing under the original finish, depending on, of course, the type of original finish.

Didn't Eight Bore recently complete a set up of one of these rigs. Maybe he will chime in.

Jent P. Mitchell III. TheSetting-Jig" that Revdocdrew posted is only Secondly a Unit for Moving the Stocks'This & Thataway' (Due to space restrictions,I adapted my'Middle-ing Jig') Thats "Olde Purdey Workshop Lingo' I built it using the old "Centering Jig in Purdeys Stocking shop when I served my Time, as my pattern. The Self Centering Vise, That is hidden by the Oak frame that holds the Action of the Gun down for the Setting Operation, came to me via a Very Old Gunmaker,Now Deceased',who had it'Handed-Down to him by s Stocker who's Father used it at Purdeys North Row Factory in the 1880s So the 'Unit" is really a centering Jig, used from the Barrel-Maker to the Action Filer, to the Stocker. I've had several gunsmiths/Stockers build copies of my"Bench Universal MkIII" It has been Pictured in Shooting Sportsman, artical by Bill Buckley, and 'If my Aged memory serves me corectly Merkel McIntosh wrote about it in a Technikana that we did on 'Stock-Setting. It will be pictured in Shotgun Technicana,VOL.II with a couple of Real Stockers from the Old School c 1878-1895. We are digging UP period Photos at this time. There is a quite good photo of it on the back cover of Shotgun Tech, Vol I....Salopian, have you seen any such 'Jigs" in the Brummie Shops?? Where did they all go??? DT/CC

Mike Orlen's essay and photos are, by far, the most helpful piece of work on stock bending and the jigs to do it - at least they have been for me. I built a jig from the instructions and it worked perfectly. A lot easier than the hot oil recirc systems or whatever they are.

The clamping jig I built was a whole lot simpler to build though similar in many ways.
