A buddy of mine inherited a 10 ga. sidelock SxS with 28" barrels, and DT. The barrels are steel with strong blueing and no dents. The butt plate is a generic plastic one, and the forend is of the splinter type with a black, presumably horn material in the end. The overall feel of the gun is one of lightness and not that of my Rem 1894 10 ga.
I had a few minutes to look it over and I noticed the following proof marks on the underside of the barrels: 10C inside of a diamond, 19.1, what I can only describe as a spearhead, and the letters ELG inside of a crown. The water table has what looks to be a star over an N, although given the light I was in, the N might have been an A. The serial number appears to be 71044.
I realize that a picture is worth many words, but I was unable to get a pic at this time.
Have any of you guys heard of this maker before, or have any insight as to age or desireability?

NOT an expert!! Ned Fall ssays - See link below F. Dumoulin & Co was a Belgian gun maker located at 2 Rue de la Fontaine Liege, Belgium from 1894 to about 1930. Please check that serial number one more time as the serial number-year made table in my reference book only goes up to number 49,501+ for 1930 for F. Dumoulin made hammer doubles. Value of any old shotgun is determined by the guns condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood and the mechanical condition as well as the construction. Can you tell what serial number is the cutoff for 1898 guns? I'm trying to find documentation for "antique" classification status.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

Currently the successor Dumoulin firm in Herstal, Belgium makes bespoke shotguns and rifles of the highest quality, priced very dearly. In the old days Dumoulin made a broader range of guns but all were very well made, nonetheless.
