Last week I was buying a shotgun from an acquaintance when I saw a derelict drilling on a table. It had rusted but not pitted barrels and the barrels had been scrubbed outside with Scotchbrite or some other abrasive pad. The wood was good and it was tight The bores were nice and the rifle barrel very good. 16x16x8x57 .It was a competent gun and I took it home for a song and a whistle. Some Oxphoblue made the barrels look very nice and it will make a good "woods gun" for Florida. After I could read the barrels I discovered it was sold by Strover in Nordheim. Unlabeled JP Sauer action from 11/39. The action needs cleaning but it other than that it's a winner. Better than rusting away in a basement. This makes my second drilling from the same gun shop in Nordheim. It was still there a few years ago but as a bicycle shop.

Ben,
Good for you,it pays to keep your eyes open and always "ask".Have you slugged it yet? With a 39 date, it could be IRS instead of IR.One of the Reviers I hunted on was next to Nordheim in nothern Bavaria( I think in Ansbach county). There are likely several Nordheims, do you know which one yours is? This might be an interesting part of the story.

Mike, I was thinking the same thing but it says 8x57JR on the rib and 7.8/57 on the chamber. Be interesting to slug it and I'll just about bet it's bigger than .318.

The history of Ströver:

A. Ströver & Co. OHG.

My mistake! Of course it is Nordhausen. I can't remember what I see from the gun room to the computer anymore.
Raimey, I'll try to get some decent pics of the markings for you today or tomorrow.
Thanks fellows and sorry for the mistake

As Gilder Radner would have said-"Oh, that's very different". My hunts were still by Nordheim.

drduc,

you are right and it's far more remarkable because there were 40 years of communism in Thuringia!!!!!!!!!!
What is also interesting is, that Ströver started with his bicycle shop early in the 1880ies!!!! He realized the possibilities of this new vehicle and made it to his second leg. This surely helped him to survive in communism!

BTW, his arms and bicycle shop was destroyed by allied bombs on April 4….

Cheers,
Gunwolf
