From my experience sending a lock from a SLE to England for repair, I'm guessing John Boyd is correct. What a pain with customs. They want to know everything. When the gunsmith picked my lock up at customs in UK, he had to pay 200 to get it to repair. It was refunded on the return. It was held up in Customs in the UK for about 4 weeks due to a glitch... I'm guessing because it was a gun part. Point is, it's not as simple as mailing a letter.

Arrieta and buzz. Thanks for the posts. It's crazy isn't it, I could understand some items needing to be controlled but I think a lot of this red tape is just an excuse to bleed more money out of the working mans pockets. I had to pay several hundred pounds in import duty and handling charges for some tools that I bought in from the USA last year, it'd seem that cash oils the wheels
I suppose if you were caught importing or exporting without the proper paperwork that the end result could be a big cash fine too.

John has been in the firearms import/export business for decades.

I'm also 'guessing' he's correct.

Sheesh.

Small bits and pieces are simple to name something else and difficult to identify as to what they really are.

John Boyd,
You say "certain" gun parts require a license. My question, if possible to answer here, is what about me, as a FFL holder, sending a couple of broken mainsprings to the maker in Italy, so they can replace them? I am doing this as asked for by the customer. My opinion is that if there is any possibility of my braking the law (and loosing my FFL), I sure as hell won't do that; let the owner take the risk. The are advantages in not having a license, under the radar, so to speak..

A custom gunmaker told me a few years ago it was very hard for him to get rifle barrels into Canada, due to US law, not Canadian as a result of 9/11

Anybody with info please chime in.
