I am of course saving some good stuff for the articles smile but now have MPI and radiography on 2 barrels and radiography on another. Having difficulty digitizing the hard x-ray films with adequate resolution however.

Thought I'd remind us all of some of the 'expert' opinions expressed here and other Forums:

“Because a Damascus barrel is pattern welded and one can readily see the welds, both MT and PT would be useless for surface examination.”
“…magnafluxing would show a perfect Damascus barrel to be FULL of flaws.”
“A good magparticle technician can examine a set of barrels and find abnormal indications, usually indication of a "crack," "slag inclusion," and whatnot. They can also give you a qualified opinion on how likely the indication is to cause problems later on. They can find these inside the wall of the tubes, not just on the surface.”
“If you are concerned about the state of your barrels with regard to fatigue there are many materials labs scattered about the country, manned by ‘experts’, that could do some simple penetrant tests and other visual inspections for you to put your mind at ease.”
“And there is nothing wrong with good ole' RT, or x-ray. Yes, there will be tons of lines on the film due to all of the welds, but again, a good technician can find indications there.”

Industrial NDT has an almost 100 year history, with abundant science and academic research. HOWEVER, there are NO industrial standards for the interpretation of Pattern Welded shotgun barrels, NO published images (to my knowledge) and NO experts in interpreting radiography because no one has looked at enough to be an expert. Pattern Welded shotgun barrels are not oil pipelines SO we are all trying to understand exactly what we are seeing by both MPI and (especially) radiography.

I had a long and illuminating conversation at the Jan. Las Vegas Antique Arms Show with a gunsmith from the Northwest that routinely does MPI on Pattern Welded barrels, and has found exactly ONE unsuspected crack. The gun was a higher grade British maker's and the owner declined destructive testing to confirm the crack.

Jason graciously donated a c. 1902 Syracuse Arms No. 0 'New Twist' which sadly was the victim of an attempt to lengthen the forcing cones, and 16g short magnums. Both chambers still 2 9/16" but the MWT at the end of the right chamber is only .087; left was .110. At 3 1/8" from the breech there are four 1/4" -3/8" bulges; at 2:00, 5:00, 8:00, and 10:00. This one has a crack

A view of the bulge at 5:00 (top left of image)

MPI shows a crack extending inferiorly from the bulge

Which is not seen on radiography, so is it only superficial? I think the lucent (less dense) lines at the second 'V' represent the barrel segment welds and not cracks

About mid-barrel

MPI shows more likely cracks. Wall thickness there is .040" and no bulge by my bore gauge

But again radiography is negative for cracks, but the film does show what are very likely interior wall surface defects (pits), which is a major limitation for radiography

A different gun and image with many lucent areas likely to be pits rather than defects within the wall

Anyway - may need to have Adam dissect the areas so we REALLY know what we are seeing.
And the barrels were already unusable, so did MPI or radiography add anything (other than $250 to TEAM's bank account)?

Just like a MRI of a spine, interpretation requires an expert pair of eyes, and expertise requires looking at LOTS of digital images. I don't think anyone in the country has the expertise to interpret Pattern Welded barrel radiography at this point. BUT we've found lots more neat stuff x-raying the barrels smile and I'm hopeful that I can get better resolution of the digitized x-rays through a photo processing outfit here in Phoenix. Gee, I guess that will cost $ too frown

Thoughts?

Drew, thanks for the update, and although as you stated, no one is an expert on this but hopefully after you look at more YOU will become the expert.

Drew, I've got a line on a set of Belgian decarbonized steel barrels for you, they're from a "Spurious" gun, a T. Barker. Do you want a sample from them? It'll be a few days before I know if I can get'em or not.

Thanks Ken! I would very much like to do a composition analysis and tensile strength a segment. Need about 6".

Decarbonized steel was (mostly) Bessemer process with a reported tensile strength of 55,000-70,000.

Both the 1902 and 1908 Sears catalogs listed the T. Barker with "Damascus Finish"; etched or roll-graved pattern over some sort of steel.

Sounds good. If I'm able to get'em, I'll provide the same type sample that I did for the Belgian Twist set, I have your mailing address, but these will be from another contributor, so you'll be able to add his name to the list. I also have a set of Henri Pieper "Twist Finish" barrels, from the "Eclipse" line. I'm still not sure what I'm going to with the gun. Someone ruined the finish, and since it's in poor mechanical shape I may make a lamp out of it. If so, I could provide a sample of that as well, or do you think that the T. Barker sample will be sufficient for analysis of fluid steel barrels?

"I don't think anyone in the country has the expertise to interpret Pattern Welded barrel radiography at this point. "

You have finally determined the crux of the matter.
Which is one of the problems I tried to convey to you.
I don't know whether you have used the services of a Level III NDE Expert.
A Level I on can only perform the examination, Level II can perform and evaluate tthe examination BUT ONLY to a procedure and criteria developed by a Level III Expert.
For a LEVEL III to develop a procedure and criteria you have two options or combination of options.
First is to the prepare barrels with known defects, radiograph and compare.
The second is to radiograph barrels with suspected defects and then section to compare.
From a set of objective examinations/radiographs, try to develop a procedure and criteria for evaluation.
If you offer this service for monetary gain, you will have to have Insurance from an ASME Insurance Company such as Hartford Steam Boiler.
In this country, you cannot operate pressure retaining devices nor offer service for those devices unless you have insurance from a company such as Hartford.
Now shotgun barrels are not exactly pressure retaining but they come close in my opinion.
Now throw in the myriad of fabrication techniques that were used in the past with steel/iron that may have who knows what mechanical properties heat treated in who knows what way and you have some sense of the problem.
So the best you would be able to do is to determine a defect exists, the extent and type of the defect, inclusion, linear crack or what have you but you will not be able to determine if the barrel is safe to shoot or not,
Even with a proof test(which was devloped to eliminate barrels with internal problems because NDE did not exist at the time), you cannot fortell the future for susequent firing, you assume some risk.
Have you used the services of a Level III certified by the ASME?
Have you seen or have a copy of the Certification?(Trust but Verify)
I understand your attmept to develop some way of assuring that these barrels are safe to shoot but I still don't think that is possible to where you can provide Certification within known standards.
Certainly what you have done is very interesting.-Dick
BTW in my career in Nucelar Power I developed a Quaity Control Department complete with all Levels of NDE capability. I had to solve many problems involving NDE techniques that did not exist. In some cases due to configuration, it may not be possible to develop a procedure and criteria.

Thanks Dick.
I received a 'Certificate of Inspection' for each barrel, for both MPI and Radiography from TEAM Industrial Services, accredited to NADCAP and AS9100 Quality System, and each procedure was reviewed with the Operations Manager, Level III, FRSO.
I think we both agree that someone with a special interest, and expertise, would need to review radiography on a hundred or so barrels to understand the significance of what is seen on the digital images. AND the abnormalities would then need a metallurgical examination to confirm what they are.
I believe however that, with some more study, both MPI and radiography may prove to be complementary components of Pattern Welded barrel evaluation.

To be clear, and keep this project in everyone's radar smile

I do not believe that anyone in this country has performed radiography on enough Pattern Welded barrels to be able to confidently interpret the findings, and to acquire that expertise would require viewing 100s of barrels. The images are not easy to read and film artifacts may simulate or mask defects. And the interpreter must understand double gun barrel construction.

It was my hope that posts here and on other double gun related forums would encourage one of the principles in the MANY national NDT businesses, who has an interest in vintage guns, to devote resources to setting up a radiography service, and I believe (with time, marketing, and experience) it would be a commercial success. As always, the problem will be liability for the testing facility.

Here in Phoenix we have 3:
Western Technologies
http://www.wt-us.com/w/

Talon Group
http://www.talontestlabs.com/index.html

TEAM Industrial Services
http://www.teamindustrialservices.com/

I am also aware that APM Testing in Ithaca, New York has examined a few pattern welded barrels
http://www.apmtesting.com/testing-services/materials-tested/metal-testing.php

SO - please spread the word if you have a connection in the NDT industry!
