Wyobirds, glad you have not had any hiccups using the product. I have had enough "challenges" with this product and have had to figure ways to solve them. I will gladly share my knowledge when asked.

I started using Gun Sav'R back before Brownells sold it, about 20 years ago or so.... I used to buy it by the case direct from Chem Pak in W.V. before they had a sales network out there marketing the product, at which time they quit selling direct unfortunately.

I have never had any problems with it and I think it is the best quality gun stock finish out there. It is far superior to any and all the other concoctions that I have tested. The final finish and durability is stellar and way beyond any other products that I know of............

The ability to finish stocks in an oil style dull, semi gloss or gloss or anywhere in between, filling or not filling all the wood pores, with superb durability has made it my favorite for years...... After staining I usually apply three to four coats allowing a 24 hour curing/drying between coats....... and a light #0000 steel wool buff between coats as well.

The shrink rate of this product after application is about 50% as it cures....So after a little practice it's use becomes a simple task. This product is very easy to work with.

As noted on the product itself, "Tough, durable, scuff resistant, will not chip, peel or crack....resistant to moisture, oils, solvents and can be used to fill grain"...

It is possible to hand wax the final gloss finish, or dull to various levels meeting your customers requirements....hand waxing/rubbing the final finish should occur within the first 'few days' after the final coat is applied and before the finish reaches it's maximum hardness.

Keeping cans and the nozzles clean is a simple task.....I always clean the spray nozzles with a good quality carb cleaner, like Berrymans, directly through the nozzle immediately after each coat....it evaporates rapidly and the nozzle is then clean as new, for storage or re-use. I also add a few drops of carb cleaner in the aperture where the nozzle fits.....see pictures attached......

SEMI-GLOSS FINISH....

SATIN FINISH....

Best,

Doug

Hi Doug. Can you elaborate a little on how you achieve the final finishes making them dull, semi or high gloss ?

Thanks

Vince:

Chem Pak Gun Sav'R is available in High Gloss or Satin Gloss 14 oz. spray cans. It is also available as a hand rub in oil and as a liquid for air brush application.... I prefer the Hunter Satin and adjust the final finish as required.

http://www.brownells.com/search/index.htm?k=Chem+Pak+Hunter+Satin&ksubmit=y

I adjust the gloss level by waxing with a good carnuba wax. After the final coat cures, steel wool lightly with #0000 wool, then wax to your desired gloss by "spit shining" in small circular motions with an H20 wetted cotton patch and carnuba wax.

For dull oil finishes, rub the already semi dull satin finish very lightly to your desired dull finish with #0000 steel wool and clean up as necessary with a wetted cotton patch and carnuba wax.

I suggest you practice first on an old blank stock or other scrap piece of wood until you develop a comfort level with this product that satisfies you.

Hope this helps and Best Regards,

VERY HIGH GLOSS WITH ALL PORES FILLED......

Doug

To fill the wood grain pores easily and completely, apply Brownells purified boiled linseed oil after your dried stain application and final stain buff with steel wool.....

Brownells purified linseed oil contains driers for a 4-6 hour cure time.

Then steel wool the cured/dried linseed grain fill coat with 0000 steel wool and wet with water to check for any surface imperfections and adjust accordingly..... Then finish with several coats of Gun Sav'R as noted above for the final top coat and wax accordingly for your desired finish. Brownells purified linseed oil and Gun Sav'R are very compatible with each other.

Thanks Doug. Does one app of linseed oil usually fill all the grain or are more coats of the Linseed needed?
