I'm of the opinion that any type of lead removing/dissolving solvents shouldn't be used on a soft soldered double. I've had a few doubles that the muzzle end of the solder joints had obviously been attacked by the solvents over the years. I've been using RemOil on a brush for many years now. I haven't had the need for strong solvents.

I also use "Ed's Red". Many leave out the lanolin, I consider it one of the key ingredients. For cleaning doubles I shoot fiber wads through, I omit the acetone. For plastic wads, I leave it in. I mix it by the gallon, it also makes a great parts soak...
I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

I have always advised against Hoppe's No. 9 Benchrest Copper Solvent for use in older guns with case coloring you want to preserve.

I don't think I've ever had the need for strong solvents. I just use a bore snake and/or a bronze brush. Follow up by pushing some Beretta gun oil on patches through the barrels.

Also "Ed's Red". Here is an example of it at work. One pass after shooting some old cardboard shells with felt wads and no plastic cup (note the efficient lead removal and not even a bronze brush is needed): By far best value for money! JC

Hoppe's Benchrest 9 Copper solvent is BAD stuff. It can wipe out case colors lickety-split, as well as getting "sticky" as Daryl mentioned and being just plain unpleasant to work with.

The best, 1/2 everclear 1/2 Hoppe's #9. Drink the everclear and swab with the #9...don't get this backwards!

John, I don't believe I mentioned exactly what I've used the Hoppe's COPPER solvent on.
While I don't shoot copper pellets in any of my shotguns, I have quite a bit of experience shooting copper jacketed bullets through quite a few rifles.
Since the projectiles were copper jacketed, I did for a short while in the 90's use the Hoppe's COPPER solvent.
So I full heartedly agree with you. I don't know why anyone would use this solvent to clean a shotgun barrel.
Unless they shoot copper pellets in them. Do you shoot copper pellets in any of your shotguns? If you do, I'd advise you to stay away from this Hoppe's #9 Benchrest COPPER solvent. It's nasty stuff.
