I've heard a bit and read in Walt's book about variations at the very end of NID production. Well, yesterday I bought a 1947 Nid 16G Field Grade in near 100% new original condition. When I got it home and did a close review I found these "oddities":
1. No Ithaca name anywhere
2. No engraving
3. 7lbs-3oz
4. 28" barrels marked 2-4 that mike .010 and .020 on .665 bores
5. 2 9/16" Chambers
6. No proof marks
7. Short splinter forend with "finger release latch" (D&E?)
It may be interesting to share observations on other late guns. I think this one was made from what every they had laying around and left over. What do you think?

Sure sounds like a "clean out the bins" gun. Will you e-mail me its sn? A few questions: What era stock? Cocking indicators?? Bone case colors?? I wonder if its a 'lunch box' gun? A photo perhaps?
Best, Walt

A gun dealer here by me has a late model Ithaca 12 ga that he has marked no name with (D&E) latch.(Obviously no name on gun anywhere). The case colors look about 70% the buttstock looks to have been replaced. That is why I did not look any further. If I get time this week I will look and see if it has proof marks.

Ejector NIDs had the Deeley lever forearms to the very end. Even the very earliest NID barrels should have the Nitro Proof stamp, even early Flues have it.

Probably 15 or 20 years ago, the first time I visited Creekside Gun Shop in New York, Terry Turnbull had a big box full of finished, stocked 16- and 20-gauge NID receivers, but no barrels or forearms. As I recall they were all very high serial numbers in the 470,xxx range. I could have all I wanted for $150 apiece. I should have bought a couple just for the parts. I think over the years alot of those have found sets of barrels and have made it into circulation as completed guns.

Walt,
Are you collecting serial numbers and info as a record. If so, let me know, I have four Flues and a 37
