I consider myself a 43 year old "newbie". I've had several old timers on here help me through varous problems, usually in PM's. Still some incredible folks on this site.

And, I think there is some cutting edge information still being researched ie damascus, barrel wall thickness, finishing methods, and historic information on our favorite guns. Enough that it's still interesting.

So...I think the glass is half full .

I come here to learn about working on junkers and double guns in general. I mostly do this to get away from the daily garbage going on in the world. I try my best to sort through it here.

But, I do wonder in 20 years if anyone will care about these old guns like we do right now. Hard to know, but I doubt it.

Shoot, Phunter, in 20 years it'll be cyborg boys hunting pheasants while jabbing at X-Box controllers, wearing Google Glasses XVII, operating an Amazon.com drone thingy that shoots lasers. The pheasants won't be real either. They'll be like that mechanical owl in the movie Clash of the Titans. Bubo.

(sidebar: speaking of owls, I hope ed is o.k. No hard feelings, right, ed. All that other stuff was payback for your little Catholic jab in one of your threads. You should know better to mess with us Catholics. For cryin' out loud, we train snipers at Church. Going to come in handy for the great Pentacostal/Catholic battle in the future. I just wish which ever of you old farts is hoarding all the minty Churchill XXV's would freakin' die already and flood the market. Maybe I could get off these Chinese organ selling sites, and stop plotting how I'm going to get some kidneys to sell. I'm not selling mine. I heard there is some guy in Boston with his pants down around his ankles. He should be easy to catch, even on my bum knee. Anyways, I'll prolly just wait for Spring and shoot down to Upper Sandusky and order a semi-custom Ithaca 37. Leave the fancy shootin' iron to all you "gentlemen".

I suppose as long as future boy has his granddad, or father, and a brother/sister and maybe a cousin or two along with him, it really won't matter what he's shooting. There will be salami and bologna samiches for lunch, a bottle of Faygo Red Pop or Rock 'N Rye, some chips and a snickers. And dad can watch their eyes glaze over as he tells them stories about when he was a boy, all he had was a carbon fiber Benelli Super Sport and crappy tungsten shells. And the sun will rise, and the Earth will turn, and grandma will scream and yell as we all track mud into the kitchen.

Phunter, I started with double guns in 2004, joined here in 2009 and am 55. I still consider my self a newbie on these subjects and while I'm on other guns sites, I find this is the real go to site for serious knowledge. Quite a number here have been incredibly generous with their knowledge and I look forward to the day I feel like I can pay it forward to future newbies 20 years from now. Have a bit more learning to do still.

Buried in all of lonesome's humour, I believe, is the belief that the more things change, the more they stay the same. There will always be some segment of hunters and gun enthusiasts that fall under the spell of these guns. That won't change.

In fact, I have a long term plan to bring in new blood. I have no intention of dying and letting my guns be sold. A few will go to my son but for the rest..... I want to see the look on some young man's (or woman's) face when I gift him a classic from 130 years earlier. Hopefully, it might just be what he needs to really start a lifelong passion.

But not yet.......

Phooey. Simple decency has nothing to do with the economy, lack of experience, the passing of old guys, or any of the other excuses given. At least, it shouldn't.

As perhaps the newest newbie to the board, my observation is that it's just a couple of people who are obsessed with a few others. One such example can be found in this very thread. I believe you have the ability to block their posts if you don't want to read them.

As for the politics - I share in the difficulty regarding having an intellectual conversation with liberals. I've given up trying to be nice to them after demonstrating twice their support for an open book Marxist. The only thing worse than someone who speaks so willingly of changing the very foundations of our country are the sheeple who are too ignorant to understand what they have actually voted to support. Barack Obama has broken down what being a liberal really means in to three groups- the true Socialist/Commie/Marxists, the lazy moochers the first group feeds in order to maintain their votes, and the ignorant bleeding heart do-gooders who are actually just plain dumb and easily fooled. Which of those would you prefer to have as a neighbor or even just a dinner guest? Would you rather be married to a dumb blonde, a thief, or a pathological liar? You guys keep patting yourselves on the back for saying how much you respect the ability to have differing thoughts, but sooner or later you need to realize the conversation isn't about job security for the middle class worker who WANTS to bust his/her butt for a good wage.

Yep, you caught me. I think folks ought to be civil to one another, and I also think there are times when one ought to back away and move on. If that's a "personal agenda" I guess I'm OK with it.

Your observation is a syllogistic sequence of a conclusion not following from its premisses, Jawjadawg. You refer to intellectual discussion---in Misfires, on a shooting board!---and remove yourself from the fray because "it's just a couple obsessed with a few others." Then you say you've given up "trying to be nice to them (liberals) after "demonstrating twice their open support for an open-book Marxist." Where's the intellectual of being uncivil to those who don't share your opinion?

You postulate with specific precision of how liberals of three groups too ignorant to understand what they are voting for are changing the "very" foundations of the United States. Where's the evidence half the country's citizens---okay, Romney's 47 per cent---are lazy dolts while the rest labour for a common good? Governments change all the time as conservatives and liberals, Democrats and Republicans arrive at different views. Like the Tea Party, a loyal group.

Iconoclastic temperaments are the makings of a continent we share as neighbours from the North Pole to the Gulf of Mexico. But if I were to lie about my prime minister---who I don't particularly admire---I would be doing him a kindness. Prevarication takes opposition down.
