Dave should post some of the threads from the late 90's. I haven't seen anything here for years that were as rancorous as those, and the board survived.

I think the causes are more then what has being discussed on this thread. The fact is that there are members who hail from opposing culture and value systems, and they clash, which, well thats sort of an understatement. Neither side is willing to give an inch and each inherently distrusts those who are not from the same ilk. Posts start innocuously enough, but when one's political disposition or values becomes apparent and is contrary to someone else's, it goes south from there, and quick.
Then there is the misfires, which seems to have turned into a place for the majority of conservatives on the board to display their contempt for the current administration and the minority of participating liberals, who own and enjoy firearms. "Libtard" has became a common term of acceptable use. But the incessant day to day drum beat of liberal bashing is really ridiculous and uncalled for. It is really ridiculous when you consider the intended target of the attacks are the really leftist and flaming liberals that give the cause a bad name. These liberals never see this board, as they have zero reason to frequent it. But the guys that get it shoved in their face are one's that actually share a common interest with the membership in that we all hunt and own and enjoy firearms. Because they do not fall in line or have different opinions regarding the nature of government, regulations, climate change, firearms and the extent of the second amendment rights or what not, their motives are brutally questioned, without room or acceptance of different viewpoints. At a certain point the frustration with it leads to some nasty disputes and things are said in ill judgment. I know because I am guilty of it.
My politics are well known. It has brought the wrath of those with opposing viewpoints and values. I'm no better because I have returned the favor in kind. In the past I have taken the bait and unwisely engaged on a negative level, but its useless. Now I try not post on political threads, or on ones that contemplate opposing values. If I do post I try to keep it on the up and up. (Save for when a certain individual that follows me around the board and shows up to inject them self and their trumped up anger to rehash the past, without the ability to realize he was hand in hand with me on our decent to the bottom. Predictably he should be here soon, but you can see the ongoing food fight in other threads)
Frankly, I think Weber should shut the misfires board down and issue some civility guidelines or start banning the worst of us. I say that with the understanding I'd be among the first to go.

What can I say Geo, you had some nice ones to choose from. And I can overlook the fact you are not a staunch Democrat!

Pooch: Canvasback is correct, your posts aren't the problem. As far as general crankyness, the whole country (and I can't speak for Canada)seems to be a a bad mood these days. I see alot of it in my little part-time job. Some of it is a simple case of the shack-nasties, as winter had dragged on so long. The rest? Well, perhaps I'm projecting, but the other component seems to be fallout from "Hope & Change". Lots of folks (at least in the demographic that tends to populate this site) are unhappy and very uncomfortable with our current political climate. I agree a lot has to do with the current condition this country is in from "Hope and Change". I have been here as long as most and the "old days" had lots of new collectors joining as their financial situation improved a lot of middle class guys wanted to hunt with a nicer gun and were drawn to the doubles for both quality and seeing the market improve making their previous "investments" look good. Today, the era of an improving middle class is gone, most are struggling to keep their jobs and health care and seeing price for fuel, food go up while their pay stagnant.Instead of seeing kid off to college they find them still home on their couch with school debt and no jobs to pay for it.I was down in the "big city" Concord yesterday and could not get over the amount of homeless people,no jobs begging for food, never ever I have seen this country is such bad shape financially.People in my small town are going broke trying to keep their house warm, buying a $2000.00 shotgun is the furthest thing from most peoples mind, what they need fuel oil and cord wood ! With fewer "new" middle buyers joining the board to find out more about doubles and collecting we are left with the same old cranky crew (me included) who are set in their ways in guns and just about everything else. Most of us are fortunate to have the capitol to buy and have bought what we like but we are as a group declining. The next double gun buyers are not as lucky so its just "us" for the most part until things change for the better a bunch of grumpy old men.

True, Dave. The same middle class conditions exist here. What is different in Canada is a higher standard of discussion and debate. I correspond with many American members who are discouraged by the crude and filthy language exhibited in Misfires and rudeness in this forum. We disagree, Dave, but you are clearly a man of good heart. Market or political improvements wouldn't change others one whit.

There is no unmoderated gunboard that thrives. Knowledgeable people withdraw from the filth. You lose what you wanted while protecting filth as free speech.
So when you are spouting insults and filth, just think of that.
Out there doing it best I can.
