How do you take the old bluing off and preparing the matted areas on the ribs and receiver?

Some use a very fine wire wheel to do both.

Rust/blueing remover. No abrasive on the rib if possible.

I have picked up very small plastic handles parts cleaning brushes with either brass or stiff nylon bristles. I just used Brownells bluing remover and scrubbed the rib with the brushes.

Pooch, you can use any of the above suggestions or wornout 320 grit abrasive(lightly, for color)but don't worry about removing is all from the top of the rib.It won't hurt a thing as long as it's degreased.
