Ken, 1989. This is actually my second FJ, bought one brand new in 1991. It has a handful of tasteful modifications, 17” wheels, Race Tech forks, R1 brakes, and custom paint. Piped and jetted. I’d be lying if I said it is pleasant enough weather to ride it today. Might go shoot skeet, instead. Best, Ted

Almost all of my friends that still ride (we are a grey haired lot, also) have switched over to bikes like the Versa and the VStrom. There are several 4 corners BMW riders in that group. I always enjoyed the planted feel of a big sport bike at speed, and never spent time on forest service roads. Since I work on the things, I wanted to avoid shim under buckets valve adjusting, liquid cooling, and have always been a Japanese litre class sport bike guy. And, I’m cheap. The FJ platform was around long enough for guys to figure out how to keep it on the road, better than it was when it was new. The 17” wheel modification gets you out of the obsolete 16” bias ply only tire size, and there are other mods that open things up a bit. The window is smaller on what is available new then I remember it being in the past.
Good luck and safe riding.
Best, Ted
