Unless you are shooting a gas operated gun, where increasing amounts of dirty burned powder could gum up the action works, every payload down the bore cleans out all the previous crud. So dirty loads are not a real problem. Just clean out the last two loads and your gun is shinny and clean as a whistle. What I use to want was consistent, safe and economical loads. With today's shot, primer and powder prices I will settle for safe and consistent.

Very well stated KY Jon, very well indeed. Too many are confronted with the present powder and other component shortages and most here are only concerned with being able to shoot more clay targets between now and next fall's hunting season. Seems like a darned shame, to me, but its what we have w/very few exceptions.

In the same breath, a cared for [can you say, "sparingly" where lube is concerned?] gas gun won't much care about a bit of 'dirt', if it gets cleaned now & again and suffers from no alterations &/or parts worn beyond their service limits.

FWIW, I had to suffer using Green Dot for my target loads during the first/previous powder shortage. I spoke extensively w/a ballistician at Alliant, knowing that Green Dot was less than the best choice for light target loads. I managed to get past it and buy some of the better suited powders when they finally became availble again. Was there 'dirt' left in the bbls after firing those light 12 ga. target loads made w/Green Dot? Absolutely. The change or effect from using it in that manner was most likely wider shot to shot variations than what would be attained with more appropriate powders. I didn't have that option at the time and had zero interest in shooting 32 or 36 gram loads at clay targets, which would have handily remedied remedied the 'dirt' situation. The issue that I was confronted with at that time was one much as Greg states, availibility.

Safe is doable easily enough, consistency may prove somewhat more challenging. Jon is dead on.
