But, you didn't have anything important enough to prevent you from posting your initial belittling here, did 'ja? You may as well move on to another battle, you lost this one.

Posters researched and found historical examples of the term's use, persuasive indications that its prior use by trained engineers in other fields led to its adapted use by gunmakers. Nothing surfaced suggesting its gun-related use was "generated by the obviously ignorant and promulgated by much the same."

Not having a lot else to do, I was entertained, and think it was a pretty impressive effort in etymology by those who did the research -- notwithstanding Wonko's attempt to demean it.

Yep, with "missed" being the operative word.

Just today as I was sitting around trying desperately not to Scratch I picked up my reprint edition of the 1908 Sears Catalog & was reading on the A J Aubrey Shotguns. In several places I encountered the term "Water Table" but not once Actin Flats. Had it not been for this thread I likely would not even have noticed.
Thank You Wonko for bringing it so graphically to my attention.
Perhaps its use is confined to Americans, So What. The fact that I say Screwdriver & the British say Turnscrew does not make either of us wrong or Moronic.

OED watertable definition does not refer to a gun.

The Field Book 1833

How 'bout the Antechamber. I still contend water-table antedates action flats.

I don't think every bloke in England calls a screwdriver a turnscrew..."Harry toss me that medium Phillips turnscrew, would yer mate//"
my old fella never did, and he was a tool guy, repairing grandfather clocks, music boxes & other old stuff etc
