That's weird...I just looked up "sear" (and scear as well for that matter) in the online Webster's dictionary, and no mention of anything having to do with the part in a gun lock. I guess everyone that has been calling that part by that name for the past several hundred years has been wrong, eh Wonko?
In all seriousness, all this goes to show is that even the most comprehensive dictionaries are nothing more than an abridged listing of words in a given language.

I looked up Sear in a book I have titled; Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, 1965 Edition. 4 definitions were listed, none appling to a gun part; 1; To dry up, wither 2; To scorch or burn the surface of 3; To brand with a hot iron 4; To make Callous or UnFeeling
I have no idea just who but I think someone applied definition 4 to Wonko.

Now that...is funny...

Pipes made a funny. Gastropub or bar and grill? Tubes or barrels? Monoblocked or a double shotgun barrel set cut off and bored breach end to accept turned down barrels to be soldered in place? The colloquial term gets used often enough and it becomes the language understood. It becomes the language understood and it becomes a pseudonym. Technically correct or incorrect, it happens all the time with the English language. Apparently, the Americans bastardized the English language enough that Americans came up with their own dictionaries. These dictionaries are constantly changing.

By Wonko's reasoning, we shouldn't call barrels barrels anymore since barrels are a unit of measure for crude oil. And stocks, of course, are what they trade on Wall Street. And Mike... if were going to be talking about the level of the aquafer, or architectural details, and it leads to name calling such as "moronic"... shouldn't this belong in Misfires?

Looking at this thread I can't help but think that the cold weather is causing cabin fever, or all y'all have too much time on your hands and are really bored... Carry on, and based on the 1989 Wedster's definition, have a gay time. Steve

Carry on, and based on the 1989 Wedster's definition, have a gay time. Steve Sunday I broke out with a bad case of "Shingles", (There Ain't No Good Case of'em) you know them thangs you roof with. Right now I'm in kind of a "Fowl" mood & not Gay by either definition. I am still myself enough though to comment there is a distinct difference between the use of Water Table & using "Monoblock" to denote cutoff barrels that are composed of two to four pieces brazed together. That one should not be allowed to come into common use, Plus it has no Gunmaker connection I am aware of. Monoblock by Gunmakers is always used to denote a "One Piece" breech piece into which tubes are inserted to make the barrel set. As my Dad used to say "That's a Horse of Another Color".

Get well Miller. I'm down with a pneumonia caused by a secondary infection from the flu.

Miller, I had shingles years ago, man was it miserable! After a few weeks, at a neighbors suggestion (she was a nurse) I began taking huge doses of Vitamins C and B12. The next thing I knew the shingles cleared up. Steve
