hi. just regitered in. thank you. i have an ithaca crassdouble serial number 91650,built around 1900-1903.ihave a customer who would like it restored. my question is ,does anyone have a schematic or drawing of the forend? it appears to be a push button release, but the only way to release it is to push down through with a punch. is there a piece missing? i've worked on a lot of doubles but i've never seen one like this. any help would be appreciated. thanks pbl

With the serial number as posted, the gun would actually be a 1903 Lewis model. Forgive my non-technical jargon... but the button pushes up against an oddly shaped fulcrum backed by a flat spring. My guess is that the button just doesn't have enough clearance because of dirt/oil build-up. I may be able to post a picture later if it would help. You only need to pull the two interior screws and the metal should just pull out of the forearm, no need to fear an explosion of parts.

thanks R.R. so the button is missing. i've degreased and cleaned the piece. the serial number from my research shows in the the crass block of numbers.Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.the metal ring is out of the forearm.is there a significant diference between the crass and the lewis as far stock to reciever design?i've had the entire piece apart, but when he first brought it in to me. i could see the fulcrum down in the forend, but no other piece to push down with and i couldn't see hunters 100 years ago taking a nail or a roll punch to get the forend off. thanks pbl

The Crass model has a snap on/pull off, forend. No release lever.

Chuck H, That is one lovely Ithaca! I think the Crass is the most elegant of the Ithaca actions and yours is a fine example! Gorgeous Damascus as well. Who did the restoration work if you dont mind my asking? Whoever did it, they did a first class job.

I recently traded for a Crass #2 that I think has never been redone and is very pretty and fun to shoot, but unfortunately I don't know how to post pictures.

Dustin, A fella up in NY did the work. From what I know he did all the metal prep and Mr Turnbull did the casehardening and possibly the carbonia blue. The fella restoring it also restocked it faithfully except with modern dimensions, but held to all the details of the original including the checkering pattern and forend tip. Murphy, email the pics to me and I'll post them. Just click on my name in the left column and a pulldown will appear, just go to "view profile" and my email address should be there. Here's a detail survey of mine.

Chuck, The guy in N.Y. who did the stocking, metal prep, his name wouldn't be Larry Schuknecht would it? The work is superb!

beautiful guns guys , but i'm still a little confused. i have a few sources that say that the crass serial #'s run from 17,235 to 94,108 and the lewis runs from 94,109 to 123,677. R.R. says that the number on this one, 91650 is a lewis. can anyone explain this? thanks pbl
