I got a email alert from Pook & Pook Auctions in Downingtown Pa (near Valley Forge) for an estate auction to be held tonight (6pm) & Tomorrow daytime (9am) (1/17-1/18).

The catalog seems to be a large amount of 17th-early 20th century period pieces including items from the early China trade, Pennsylvania/New England period pieces including furniture, decorative arts and even a Ca 1760 pair of Silver Queen Ann Candlesticks.

One of the items in the catalog is a Greener 10g w/32" barrels.

This is #593 in the catalog and will be sold about midway thru Saturday's round (9am thru ?? Eastern time).

It can be found via this link as well as details of absentee bidding and policies. While they do put up estimated value ranges I found that they will quickly go down to starting bids of $25 from whatever (a few hundred?) they have up. even so, if it is an item of value the bids will go up quickly to whatever the buyers are willing.

Here are some pics from their online catalog.

I have no association with this item or auction house except having bought a few non-gun related items from them in the past. They are a very reputable antiques auction house. they aren't gun specialists but would gladly answer and document any/all specific condition/provenance questions you might have before the auction.

They do move the bidding along quickly and will sell 60-100 items and hour. No trying to milk things and no inflating provenance/attribution with shady side-show hustler tactics (IE: "I'd ALMOST guarantee it to be a....") If an item cannot be properly verified as "xyz" it is not sold as that.

I can forward their email notice with highlights if anyone wants it. My email is in my profile & I usually get PMs.

Hello Lee, That is a nice old Greener that unfortunately has been rebarreled with Belgian tubes making it not nearley worth $4,000 IMHO

Best Regards, George

yup.

I also wonder if that is the original stock. Seems as if it doesn't quite match the for-end. The Feathered figure walnut looks like an escapee from a Win 21, complete with the trap pad.

as to price; I agree. Since they aren't gun people I suspect they either picked a generic blue book value or the local FFL gave them a SWAG. Good thing is they don't Usually have reserved prices and it will sell for $25 if that is all that is bid.

I know of a pair of genuine Frank Loyd Wright chairs that sold for $25. I've also seen a few pieces of high quality unmolested 18th century furniture (generically described due to lack of provenance/documentation) go from $25 opening bid to over $6,000 with aggressive international phone bids.

The gun is just an interesting item that turned up in the mix. I couldn't buy it for $400 these days but just find these things entertaining and cheaper to watch than Cable TV.

It looks like the barrels that come on a lot of Belgium guns that you can engrave what ever you like in the open space.

I just took a look at a few other items in the sale by clicking the Previous/Next buttons near the lot#.
I didn't go too far but found a very ornate Cased Tipping and Lawden Sharps model 1A pepperbox pistol, Cased pair of McDermot flintlock dueling pistols, Cased pair of D. Egg percussion traveling pistols, 36cal 1840 Pennsylvania flintlock rifle, etc.

FWIW.

What did those duellers bring?

I want a set of boxed duellers...

Wonder if both lots were the real thing.

The actual prices realized (with buyers premiums) aren't posted yet. all past auction catalogs & prices can be found here http://www.pookandpook.com/catalogs/past.php .

The guns & a Large 1807 dated Powder horn inscribed with a cityscape of New Orleans are in lots 584-604.

You can also search past catalogs there. I did a quick search for any gun/pistol/rifle items and find a large # showing up with modest prices (Browning Superposed trap gun sold for $385) to some special ones (a Cased J. Purdey .70cal percussion half stock rifle, Dickson, Woodward, Boss, Parker, H&H, Grant, etc).

Well worth looking thru for a variety of interesting, odd & historically notable things with pictures, descriptions, estimates and final prices including buyers premiums.

Have fun reading.

they are one of the best auction companies for being on the up&up. They routinely handle Museum deacquisitions, Estates of major collectors/appraisers and such. If anything is in any way questionable they either pull it from the sale or update the listing to reflect the true status. Most major events are advertised well in advance, a bound catalog is distributed (Think of Christies, etc catalogs), made available to the public, Museums and other institutions. Any questions on upcoming items condition will be thoroughly answered including additional photos. I have been there and watched them work with a prospective buyer by phone while taking a dozen photos of specific areas of a a modest decorative item.

check them out yourselves including the descriptions which would also state whatever provenance they might have. It may only state that in brief but printed catalog and pre-sale inquiries may give more extensive information that is available.
