It was made for R. Hanson and sold yesterday. Sorry that's all I know.
PS: The auction house misspelled his name by adding a "S" at the end, wounder anyone found it.

LOL, never noticed that. My mind saw Owen and that was that. I stumbled across it while researching a feature of the $150 Krag via the Krag Collectors forum. Someone had linked to it because of the number of Krags they had this time.

I am laid up and couldn't attend the Morphy auction, but I have a whole list of stuff I wanted to examine, including the Crescent .410 marked L.C. Smith with a monster estimate. Anyone buy anything up there?

My favorite grip style is the rounded pistol grip so the early Owen is particularly appealing to me.
It seems to be a rare grip form for early American bolt guns. Is that right?
Also, it is variously called a semi-pistol grip, a half grip and a Prince of Wales grip. None of those seems accurate. Is there a more correct term for the style?

On rifles, I've heard and seen it called an "open grip" and a "half-pistol grip." The terms you mention seem to be used mainly in reference to shotguns, except the first, which I've seen applied to rifles quite a bit.

Parker Brothers called them ball grips from the 1800s, when there actually was a bit of a ball on the end. Later, the style changed, but the factory people still called them ball grips. The pictured Owen is certainly not a true "Prince of Wales", usually only seen on Woodward shotguns. How about that sale? Anyone go? Couple of NRA Sporters, U.S. marked Colt pocket models. Ace #13 and #376. Maybe it's better I did stay home. Who bought the Owen?

I don't know but can name four or five who did not. I did not bid, would not have improved on anything I have. An interesting rifle and I hope we do learn more. If the new owner would like to talk about the engraved floorplate you could email me.

Eightbore, What makes a grip a true Prince of Wales? What is the history of that style relative to Woodward shotguns? Thanks

I would rather have someone else answer this question. However, all open grip guns are not POW. A true Woodward POW is rather long in configuration, with the cap area flat and parallel to the rib, not slanted as on most capped pistol grip guns. The capped area, rather than protruding from the bottom line of the stock, blends into it. Of course, my idea of what a POW grip is may be all wrong.
