A little better picture, I remember sweating over this cap trying to get all the hot blue off it chemically and not messing up the engraving. Later when I talked with Mr. Danner he said I should have left it alone, he could rust blue over hot blue and I would not ever notice it.

In the other thread I suggested that these engraved caps were offered to the trade as a more or less catalog item, any other opinions or better yet anyone know the history?

Any thoughts/comments on DYI rust bluing? I am wondering about solutions used & lessons learned. Kind of intrigued by the possibility of rust bluing over hot bluing, any pitfalls to avoid there?

Rust bluing could be a thread on it's own and it would get quite long. Rust bluing is not hard just like anything there are things you need to learn before starting. Metal preparation is the most important part of any bluing.

Rust blue over hot IS discernible, but especially if the rust blue is a bit more etched. Keep it glossier and it won't stand out. Steve
