I think the airline requirements allow ammo in the 'unopened' box with the amount limited only by the 50lb bag weight limit or whatever you're willing to pay in "over-weight". Not in carry on of course! I know Canada allows 200 rounds to be imported without duty and I've carried that in my empty cooler before...Geo

If you are going to hunt desert quail, get no. 7 shot. Too many cripples run off with smaller stuff.

As others have posted, you can fly with up to 11 lbs. in factory boxes in your checked baggage with most airlines. Tell them you have ammo. Should work out to about 5 boxes of one ounce 2 1/2" shells although I'm sure you could get away with 6. I have flown from Salt Lake to Calgary with a flat of shells that I split between two checked bags but that may be risky. More than likely, they will not weigh the boxes...

Might be too late to ship ammo as it has to go ground. Pack the max allowed in original boxes, plan on going to WLM up the 101 as suggested, if that doesn't work out for some reason, hit the good doctor up for his 2 boxes and you'll have more than enough for a week of hunting. Frankly, 4 boxes will probably outlast you and your dog for the week.

I have experienced more delays flying with ammo then flying with guns. Depending on the airport I find that where I fly from they always weigh the ammo to make sure it's 11 pounds or under. Your mileage may vary but I wouldn't try going over that amount. You can put it in the suitcase no problem just watch that you don't go over the weight requirement for your baggage.

I fly with guns at least a couple of times a year. It's never the same exact process from year-to-year (the signed card goes inside the case, now the card gets taped outside the case, & "you lock the case", no, TSA locks the case...)and there are differences between airlines (a training issue?). The trick is to keep calm, have a locking case (I use one with combination locks built-in) and give yourself plenty of time to check-in your luggage. I think it is now a weight issue (11-lbs), but in past years it was something like two boxes of shells per gun. I cant speak to handguns, but for long guns it's still pretty straightforward.
FWIW: some destinations can be dicey, such as Boston, NYC, and D.C. California may now be complicated as well. On those locations, some homework and a call to the airline is advised.

FWIW, The last time I flew out of LAX (Los Angeles) with a shotgun a few years ago, there was nothing dicey about it. I looked at the TSA rules online and the airline rules, before I went to the airport. I didn't fly with ammo. The gun was in a cheap Docskil plastic case with very cheesy locks built in to the hasps. I flew directly into Newark. There was no problem in Newark either.

Mike you were flying correct? I've crossed into Canada by automobile almost every year since 1967, sometimes twice yearly, with 16 and 12 ga factory shells and reloads. All they ever ask each person in the vehicle is how many rounds you have per gun and I always say "about two boxes" and have never had a bit of trouble.
