There are obviously many who think it adds elegance to the stock. Surely a properly fitted skeleton plate or a heel(not heal) and toe plate is very handsome. However, as Chuck said, the few sparse lines scratched into a lower level Spanish gun like the ones I can afford, make it look unfinished to me, like a cheap air rifle. That's my opinion. I don't like the way hard butted guns slide around in a gun rack, whether the butt is plastic or checkered. Any gun I expect to keep for any reasonable length of time will likely end up with a Pachmayr pad on it.

As an anti-slip expedient on a checkered butt, add vertical strip of self-adhesive 3/4 or 1" wide Velcro hook. Did this to Charlin and AyA No.2, liked it and finally added a strip to slippery buttplate on Flues. Only problem, straps of Cabellas vest have an affinity for the stuff; good coming up as you can't slide the butt but after the shot literally have to pull the butt away from the strap like a sink plunger. When you need it off there for whatever reason, any residual adhesive easily removed with Bestine.

And JDW thinks a recoil pad is ugly! How oogly is a fine checkered self butt with a strip of Velcro or stair no-slip glued to it?

The best anti slip I have found is a bandsaw combined with a thin red pad fron Galazan. If, after a tial period, this does not work, take the pad off, add Miracle Gro, wait 3 to 5 years and re-checker.

I used the word "expedient" but I guess what appeals to McGuyver is lost on aesthetes. Honestly, I thot it'd be OK on one of those "cheap ($3K-$5K)" guns.

Dave, I've seen pictures of checkered butts that were bored out to reduce weight or rebalance, were bored out and had lead inserted to add weight or rebalance, then plugged, refinished and recheckered, no evidence. Don't let the balance/weight issue make up your mind.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Is there anything uglier than a glaring red/orange Silvers pad stuck on the end of a nicely figured buttstock?  The Silvers pad is a classic case of going for the 'period' look regardless of aesthetics!
