My personal opinion on Carving on stocks is that it is very tasteful and beautiful when worked into a checkering pattern or as part of a checkering border or an extension of such. Much like most of the examples shown in this thread.
But carving in the middle of a butt or in the middle of open space like game scenery and such is just for the birds. But... That is just how I feel.
