BrentD,

I have to agree with SDH, Monty Kennedy's book tells you damn little on how to checker. There's plenty of pictures of the work of various stock makers of the 40's and 50's including all the top notch craftsman. But nothing on how they did their work. I've had my copy some 40 years now and I still occasionally look at it but it isn't helpful to anyone starting off checkering. My advice get some descent checkering tools and a lot of scrap Walnut, lay out a design and practice cutting straight lines. Then graduate to shaped pieces of scrap and learn how to cut around curves BEFORE you try it on a finished stock. Bad checkering looks a lot worse than no checkering at all.
