A family member has his father's gun. He would like to put it back toward the shape he remembers when his dad had it and is considering having it reblued. This is not a collector's gun. The interest is not to increase, or even maintain, the gun's objective value, but rather to keep it in good shape because of personal value. Is rebluing such a standard job that all he has to do is find someone local and have it done? Or, are there choices and concerns to keep an eye on? Thanks.

If it is a SxS or O/U it needs to be reblued by a "cold process" or the solder holding the barrels and rib can be damaged. Hot tank reblue is O.K. for pumps and semi-autos.

Your friend will probably enjoy the shotgun more after it is professionally refinished.

Have your friend give Bill Schwarz a call. Bill can do the job nicely for him.

I would suggest that if the original blue is worn off that it was done by his Dad's hands and he should keep it that way. Have the gun cleaned and lubed by a pro if you want, but leave all the wear marks, they're the history of the gun, his father's voice across the years.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

I don't want to sound sappy or anything but if those wear marks were put there by my father, I guess I would want to leave them there. Sounds like they don't affect the gun functionally so why not leave those reminders on the gun. They should blend nicely with your own marks.

Yep, I agree with Recoil Rob and leave the gun as is.

Just my thoughts.

Well said. The stories those marks could tell.
