I got this email from his daughter this morning.

"Mark K Benenson passed away this past Wednesday. Please feel free to spread the sad news.
There won't be a funeral, but we are going to have some kind of
memorial event in the spring.
Regards.
Fifi Benenson"

I'm so sorry to see such a talented researcher and collector pass from us. We would miss connecting at the Maryland Antique Arms Show on a regular basis. Early the week after the show, I would hear what treasures he had seen that I had not. Bill Murphy

I never met or spoke to the man but here. He seemed a gentleman, very knowledgeable, and willing to share that knowledge.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Mark was an extraordinary man. Little known was his professional life, and I knew little myself. He a was the head man at Amnesty International for a while until they learned of his association with firearms.
As a lawyer he was a champion of 2cd Amendment rights and always invested in retaining personal freedoms.
His contribution to the ACGG Historic Custom Firearms display in Reno a few years ago was enormous.
Mark was THE Krag collector, nationally know for it and always a mystery to me, maintained his collection in Manhattan, NY.
I did not know Mark Benenson nearly well enough…
Rest In Peace Mark.

Thanks SDH-MT for bringing our attention to Attorney Benenson's work. Today, I read some of his interviews and position papers.
I thought, "Wow, what an intelligent, principled, human being".

I want a death notice like that, equal time for professional comments and gun comments. I take it that Mark's death notice was written by a close friend or gun toting relative. Murphy

I echo this thought.

The last time I talked to Mark in person was in Las Vegas at the gun show shortly before the Linden-Whelen Springfield was to be auctioned off. He said he was only looking at things at the show because he wanted to have enough money to but the Whelen rifle. wink

I will always remember him telling my brother and me "Linden wasn't really the best stock maker, but he wrote the book and that helped make him famous". smile

Mark answered several questions I asked him via e-mails over the years and his knowledge of gun values was especially helpful. He never did agree with me that the Winchester 71 was a better looking lever action than the Savage 99 but that was probably all we ever disagreed on. The last e-mail I received from him detailed what happened at the auction of the Whelen rifle.

Although I only talked to him in person a few times I have and will miss him in the future. Mark was a great person.
