In my view, steel is too hard except for removing corrosion (such as caused by neglect) and I would never use an electric drill to clean a gun. The right brass brush and a good solvent cleaner cleans it so easily.

Something must be VERY different to my gun/cartridges/cleaning kit to need steel wool and a power drill!

The Outers brush I was talking about is brass or bronze, not steel.

After a few hundred trap rounds there is a buildup of scunge in my barrels. I suppose it is made up of plastic, lead, and powder. An aluminum rod chucked up in a battery powered drill with the Outer's brush can clean it out in about ten minutes. It takes me a long time with a the classic wooden cleaning rod and British brass brush.

I don't see how I can damage the barrel with aluminum and brass cleaning tools.

I am glad to be here.

Even when I've fired a few 100 cartridges, a few passes (by hand) with a brass brush after the cleaner has had a few minutes to work its magic has always done the job easily.
The only difference I can think is that I don't use plastic.

The only exception has been my .410 - where I have occasionally had to use a second application of cleaner etc., but .410 pressures are very high.

While I would think the Steel Wool wrapped brass brush would be actually "Needed" only in severe cases I also think the wool is of a very soft grade of steel & one would likely wear out two or three Drill Motors without removing any significant amount of metal from the gun's bore.

I think you are probably right in that, but there is also the considerable risk of little bits separating from the steel wool and getting in 'the works', under the ejectors, on the joint hook and other undesirable places. Its just something I wouldn't want in my guns!

There are steel brushes (called 'Turks head' brushes) that can be used for the removal of rusting, corrosion and I suppose very severe fouling. They are very severe in action and although I have a old one, I have never used it
