Mike, while I don't disagree with anything you wrote there, I don't think you got my point.

"I can pick up one of my father-in-laws new Rugers, Coopers, or even a Bushmaster and, with his well-tuned ammo, I can shoot well under 1 moa for 10 shots any day of the week. I don't see that with the best benchrest breech seating shooters except on pretty rare occasion. It makes me question the superiority of breech seating in general."

Brent,
I think your comparing apples and oranges... jacketed vs cast bullets? Not a fair comparison.

Just casting accurate lead bullets can be trying to say the least.
Maintaining mold temps, alloys etc. can be critical. All my match bullets are weighed and culled as required. Quality jacketed bullets are going to highly consistent in weight. The differences in velocity comparatively are not even close which leads to it's own set of challenges. Throw in bullet lubes, seating depths, powder types and charges, et al and lead bullet shooting can be a challenging but a rewarding venture.

A lot of what Ken says is why I like the plane base lead bullet game, I have control over most everything save the powder and primers.

Took me a couple years just to learn to manage the mould so I got good consistent bullets.

A few years ago a neighbor brought me a brand-new in the box Remington 700 in 30-06 and with a new scope and mounts and asked if I would mount it for him. When I was done he then said "Well you go to the range all the time can you sight it in for me". He gave me a box of Remington factory 180's. I asked if I should shoot a Moose on way home for him as well but the humor missed him.

I took the rifle to the range, I had bore sighted it at home, fist shot was on the paper at 100-yards. I carefully adjusted the scope and the next three cover-leafed into the "X" ring. I brought his rifle back and handed him the target, he said "thanks" and threw the target into the garbage can. About summed up my my thoughts on the subject....Boring ;-).

I shoot custom sporters with jacketed bullets all the time but for fun it's the Schuetzen rifle.

Exactly. And that is why my most modern rifles are barely into the 20th century.

From back when men were men, and women were glad of it! smile

Every rifle, shotgun and pistol I own is pre-war (with the exception of a 28ga. O/U).

Breech seating can be beneficial with bolt guns too. I experimented with breech seating in a Winchester M54 .30/30. The resulting groups made with a plain base bullet custom made to fit the throat would make me blush to tell of.
