My computer skills being something less than my skill as a rocket surgeon, I cannot find any information on this cartridge. I'm not certain I even have the correct name for it. Is anyone familiar with it and if it can be formed from something existing or if it might be available?

If I remember correctly, the Peterlongo series( also 8mm) headsize was more or less close to 8x57.If this is so, they could be made by turning the rim off 9.3x74R, turning new extractor groove,fireform, and trim to length.I will try to remember to check.BYW I know 9.3x74R is usually smaller than 8mm,but should fireform ok.

This cartridge is Austrian, even though the name sounds Spanish.

The correct name is not Peter Longo but rather Peterlongo. Johann Peterlongo opened a big gunshop in Innsbruck in the 1850s and the marque existed long after his death. A Google search for 9x71 Peterlongo will give you drawings with principal dimensions, etc. I do not have any experience with this obsolete cartridge but am quite sure that the pertinent rifle must be a nice Austrian Mauser.

Thanks wolf! If that's it, it is showing a rimmed version. This particular rifle is a Mauser and Jani is correct. Nothing fancy, just classic. Here it is:

Mike...I know your feelings about the necessity of a lathe, well I may have a line on one from a fella at church...which would make this project imminently more doable!!! Thanks for the info and I would be pleased to know what you find out.

As promised, I checked the headsize. It seems the 9X71 Peterlongo headsize is also a little smaller than 8x57.This makes the 9.3X74R headsize almost perfect for the 9X71.It(COW)shows the rim as being 1 or 2 thousanths larger than the headsize, but this is within manufacturing tolerances an not enough to make the cartridge rimmed or even simi-rimmed. It is a rimless cartridge. It's great that you have a line on a lathe, let me know if I can help you.

The seller of the rifle dug through his books and sent me a fully dimensioned drawing of the cartridge with directions for forming. Either you two have the same book or the wealth of knowledge filed away in your brain is incredible and your recall even more so!!!!!! (we know that to be true anyway!!). Same directions as yours, use 9.3 X 74R case, turn off rim, cut extractor groove, size, trim and fireform. Is there a standard width/depth to extractor grooves on Mauser actions?

I asked the seller if he would hold it for me contingent on some one of us finding a parent case and a way to make it. We're there...rifle will be ordered! Thanks a bunch!!!
