Michael:

Have no clue as to what was intended. To add to the "unique" engraving discussion, take a close look at this one.

I like the idea of the pups in that one scaring the cat. Now ya don't see that very often.

The adult dog indulging the pup on his first point. Must encourage the next generation.

Roy,

I started the thread while sifting through the digital midden heap of internet guns for an english 28ga. Finding this little belgian 28ga promted the posting. As I said this scratching really made me chuckle and after looking at it awhile I became somewhat unnerved.
That is an outstanding engraving of puppies and their mother pointing. If it isn't by Loy it must have been by someone influenced by him. That picture made my evening.

Cheers,
Michael

I'll bet it is by Loy as well, if you look between the 2nd dog and the stump, below the lock plate you can see and L engraved there

Hello Roy-

It's on a shotgun.

I've shown images of it before, but haven't really ever heard much of a response to it.
I really like the gun, it's a -very- high grade pinfire gun from 1859

Here are a few more of it...

I included that last one for Geno's benefit and for the benefit of the other Bernard groupies.
I'm just about as sure as can be that Bernard had nothing to do with the engraving on the gun, this just is another sign that someone spent a great sum of money on it when it was first made.
Also note the island locks and the beautifully striped wood. This thing was a real looker when it was first handed over to it's owner.
I'd have to look at it to make sure, but I think there are nine such 'game scenes' in the gun's engraving work.
