Looks like it might have been restocked when it got the second set of barrels, as that is a post WW-II Field Grade checkering pattern on the pistol grip, not a No. 2 checkering pattern. Then again maybe that is what a very late 1947 or 48 No. 2E got? Normally seen NID No. 2 checkering pattern --

Gil- Yes this is my first SxS. I have loved shooting my step fathers Ithaca's so I am glad to have one of my own.
Researcher- Thanks for the info. I will need to look further into the stock and determine if it is a replacement. Do you know if there are numbers anywhere?
Drew- Thanks for the the history lesson. Does that mean the barrel is Damascus? How about the second barrel?
Walter- thanks for the insight on the X number and trying to find some info on the serial number. That solved a big mystery.
I am excited to educate myself further...but equally excited about getting it cleaned up and shoot some clay!

Not Damascus, Todd. And as noted above, you got one of the very late NID's before Ithaca got out of the doublegun business. Very nice!

The serial number on the stock, if marked, will be under the trigger guard tang. Ithaca was clearing our the double guns at this time--cleaning out the bins as it were. Guns were being offered at 'deals' and a variety of subtle differences in configuration are seen. Your gun has all the options except a vent rib. Your statement about 'cleaning it up' frightens me a bit. Your gun looks to be in new condition. Dust it off, lube the rub places with a gun grease and enjoy it as it is. You have a very nice gun just the way it is!

I'll say this: if there is a nicer NID 20 ga. two-barrel set with a beavertail and pistol grip than yours, I want to see it.
That gun appears "as new". The last thing you want to do is start monkeying with it. Don't start turning screws and taking it apart to search for some useless serial no. i.d. on the wood etc. Take good care of it and shoot it a lot.
What are the barrel lengths? JR

I agree with John there. Leave her alone and start blasting away.

The barrels are 26".
Trust me...I don't plan on having anything refinished or anything crazy like that. I put some light oil on what I believe to be the ejectors on the barrels as they seemed to not travel smoothly.
I thought a gunsmith might be wise to look it over and lub/clean the mechanics prior to firing. If this is a mistake...please let me know.
Any special oils or products to maintain the barrels, wood, & components you guys recommend. Or should I just use the same regiment I have used on my "newer" guns for the past 30 years?

Todd, no, not a mistake. That's what I do. Let a gunsmith look it over, lube and clean it if necessary. From what it looks like in the photos you found yourself a real treasure there, enjoy it.

Congratulations Todd. Nice gun. I know that's a gun to be proud of.
I have a grade 3, 20ga, SST ejector that I found pretty well used up. I've spent more than I could sell it for to get it to reasonable condition. But its now useable and I feel pretty good about shooting it.
I also have a couple field grade NID 410 ejector guns I like to hunt.
Welcome to the Ithaca club.

Todd, congratulations on a really nice Ithaca. You will want a qualified double gunsmith to service your fine shotgun. If you will post the general area of the country you live, someone can direct you to a qualified gunsmith. Here in TX, Kirk Merrington would be the one I choose.
