I have just acquired my first SxS and had a few questions.

It is an Ithaca NID 20ga #2 gun with two barrels. One is 1,2 & the other is 2,4 choke. All parts have the same serial number stamped and in my research the gun is a NID from 1948.

The stamping I have a question about is "X670" on the gun and on one of the barrels. The other barrel does not have this marking.

Also if this gun truly came new with two barrels...would the barrels have similar markings? The reason I am asking is one set had the "D" with what looks like a crown above it. The other does not have this.

I will upload photos....

Thanks for any comments.

The X number means special order. The gun likely went back to the factory to have the second set of barrels added. Thus the different barrel markings. What is its serial number?

Walter...I sent you a PM with the numbers as I did not want to disclose them on public forum. Maybe I am too paranoid and it really is no big deal.

Thanks

Todd, seeing the photos confirms my thought of the gun being sent back to the factory for the second set. Chet Rogers proofed the top set, the bottom set (with the 'pac man mark) was proofed by Joe Scaglione. The numbers identify the choke, 1 being IC, 2 Mod, 4 is full. A very nice high conditioned gun. Congratulations!

So is the original set most likely the one without the x670 proofed by Joe Scaglione? And the second set was done by Chet Rogers and marked X670?

Re: the crown over D mark. Around 1930, Crucible Steel Co. purchased 'rough forged tubes' tubes from Delcour-Dupont of Nessonvaux. Jean-Baptiste Delcour was the father of Lucien & Oscar Delcour and had been a manager for Pieper & Cie before opening his own shop specializing in Damascus barrels. Canons Delcour was registered in 1921, and remained in business until about 1968 when they were acquired by Fabrique National de Herstal.
The mark is found on Fox, Ithaca NID (“Best Fluid Steel”), Ithaca Lefever Nitro Special A-grades, and Smith Field and Trap grade guns.

Todd, That would be my guess also. Chokes 2/4 were the most common. 1/2 are now a days more useful, that combination was less popular when this gun was made.
