What you could suggest for 1 year pointing dog, what is the best on the market today? Actually I'm not going to use e-colar all the time, beeper mostly, but young dog got some bad habits such as running behind small birds and very far away. My persuasions and strap got no effect on him - too healthy and too smart dog thou Geno, I have no idea what experience you may have had with e-collars. However, it will not fix the problems you are talking about. Only going back to basic training will fix these things. A big running dog can not be controlled with an e-collar. It is a matter of displine. When you call the dog or whistle, it has to come to you. Questing after the "wrong" birds will never be fixed by the use of an e-collar. If anything, you will cause the dog to "blink" or worse, make the dog totally bird shy. A beep on demand collar is nice. I use them on both of my dogs. However, I could just as easily use a bell, which I some times do. I always use a whistle. I have not had to shock a dog in almost over 2 years. Pete

Dogtra stuff for us. We use Dogtra collars, releases and launchers for our dog training. Have had great success with all of our Dogtra products.

I hope beepers in the coverts around St.Petersburg don't become the pervasive nuisances they are on public hunting grounds here in Minnesota. Enjoyment of nature is not enhanced by the insistent beep-beep-beeping from hunting parties who can't keep track of their dogs without electronic assistance.

We live and die by beeper collars, on wild Chukars. I owned Innotek 2 dog, liked the features, but they aren't built to stand up nor to be repaired. I currently have a 4 dog TriTronics Classic 70 (2 years). This unit is used nearly 300 days per year, they perform well and are hardy units. Recently one of the collars had a problem with a probe not unscrewing. Tritronics sent me a new reciever immediately. They're pricey but will last for a long time to come. Years ago I had a 1 dog AL-70 LR it lasted me 8 years before I finally sold it on Ebay. Probably still running.

I agree with Pete on the correction issues. If your young dog is chasing tweety birds let him, he will eventually bore of this and get interested only in gamebirds. I believe it is important for the dog to come to that on his own, NOT ELECTRONICALLY. You risk having the dog lose intensity or drive if you shock at the wrong times, particularly if the dog is "shy" at all. If you want the dog to work closer, use your check cord and plant birds so he understands that being around you is where he can find birds. Every dog matures at their own rate, just like humans. Go easy on the electronic correction. Good Luck!

We work plant birds as field trial champs allready The dog is very obedient untill... we meet small not game bidrs! That's it! Ales Kaput! Dog looses his brain and is ready to run behind these d*mn birds till end. His mother did the same till two years old and untill training colar been used twice or triple of times (pushes). Total satisfaction, no after-effects. Re. colar... As I can see all brands are good enough to choose from, but I like new SportDog DT-1850, it looks good and I have read several good comments about this product at Cabelas.

Hi Geno,
I use the 2 dog Doggtra T&B and love it. I mostly use the beeper set on point only and often use only the locator button to find my dark GSP in tall brush. I agree in using the e-collar judiciously but all dogs are different and my last and now gone GSP needed a reminder that he was supposed to listen. Like people all dogs are different for some more timid or gentle soles e-stimulation is probably a bad idea, but for a hard headed, hard charger sometimes it can be the answer. It worked well for Gus and fine for Hank but I am extremely careful with Shooter. Jeff G. I had a DT prior to the Doggtra and didn't like the DT my brother is always replacing the recharable battries in his Tritronics and it has malfunctioned, I would highly recommend Doggtra with Beeper

Tri-tronics is hard to beat for service and free updates as technology marches on.
A Springer Spaniel, a 6# double and a fair day to hunt.

Me, I'll go with Dogtra all the time, period. I've had TT (good unit without a doubt - no problems), DT (problems with range and stimulation) and Innoteck (pure junk, IMHO, this includes Cabelas brand and Lion Country Supply). Dogtra has proven itself in my book, never had one problem with it Xmiter and beeper work flawless, well made, reliable. Overall as I said A number one.
Check out Pointing Dog Journal BBS great forum on pointing dogs and lots of good folks and advice. They tell it like it is.
Good Luck!!
