Has anyone read "Niles' Guide to 'Affordable' Double Barrel Shotguns in America 1875-1945?" Apparently Nick Niles spent his working life in the American gun industry and spent years on this work - I wonder if anyone has seen it. There is only one not very helpful review on Amazon.

Here's a source for a few of the books http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&tn=Affordable%27+Double+Barrel+Shotguns+in+America+1875-1945 Steve

I have a copy. It is very informative about the "hardware store" and catalog guns which were popular at this time with relatively brief mentions of some of the major maker's lower grade guns. There were a lot of guns in there I was not even vaguely aware of. It must have taken a long time to put this information together.

Thanks for your report, Bob. It should be an interesting contribution to low-end American gunmaking.
His brother told me the author spent many years assembling the data and was an insider in the American gunmaking world.

So often "grandpa's gun" was one of those.

May I suggest "Dreams From My Father" by Barack Obama... a primer on the path to banning affordable American shotguns and everything else we shoot! The guy you told us would never infringe on gunowners rights just had his Sec'y. of State John Kerry sign the U.S. on to the U.N. Small Arms Treaty. Now who woulda' saw that one coming?

Not that I approve of either of the gentlemen mentioned above, but it's good to remember--so as not to suffer from excessive paranoia--that a treaty has no force in this country unless ratified by the Senate. And even though the Dems are in control of the Senate, a lot of them are red state Dems and would be committing political suicide if they voted for something like that. See the recent Colorado recall.

See the recent Colorado recall. That may well be the case Larry, however the treaty will be sitting there awaiting another bride and lie push just as they dems did to get obamacare through. And,if the past is any indication, this administration already has the " we can't wait" speech written up for the next tragedy ready to once again ignore the Constitution.

This misguided tome is already being heavily discounted almost everywhere. Really? Could you point out some of those places? A quick google search shows the book retailing at $69.95 and the deepest discount I saw was about 10 bucks.

I saw it at the last OGCA meeting for $35.
Copies were NOT going fast... even at that price.

See the recent Colorado recall. I was merely poking a jab at the guy who thinks those pictures of Obama or Kerry shooting guns are for real. I totally understand how the treaty ratification process works, but it's always nice to have a ticking time-bomb planted under your ass by anti-gun Democrats. True friends don't plant time-bombs under you. As Dave K points out, there is reason to be concerned. The anti-gunners will wait for a time when emotions rule the day. That's why we, who also know how incrementalism works, are never willing to give an inch. Quite a few extreme anti-gun politicians have long careers and never get voted out. It doesn't help our cause when so-called gun guys not only support them, but also attempt to provide cover for their anti-gun past as well.
