Recently I acquired a 1903 M/S....quite the handy little rifle! I'm not struggling to find a load, I have a couple that work pretty good, but I would be grateful for any pet loads anyone has for the 6.5 and a 140 gr. bullet.

My best results have been with Varget and RE-7. My usual picks from the IMR series didn't do very well.

I don't reload for the 6.5X54MS but did learn a few things while researching available loads. Pardon me if you are already aware of this stuff.

First is that the 1903's have bores that are larger than the american standard. The bullets in the loaded ammo that I buy measures .266, not .264 like most available as 6.5mm for reloading.

Second is that the twist rate is designed for the heavier 156 to 160 grain bullets traditionally used. Also feeding from the magazine may not be smooth with lighter, shorter bullets.

Hope this helps. I have one and they are handy and pleasant to shoot.

Yes it does Hammer, thanks. My oldest son shoots a 6.5 Swede and is sending me some 160 gr. RN to try. If I can EVER get a GOOD barrel slug and it proves so big, I have found some Hornady 160 gr. RN at .268 for the 6.5 Carcano. My best slug so far, it isn't anything to write home about, mics approximately .267-.268. The twist is about 1-7 1/2 or 1-8 so it will definitely stabilize the longer, heavier bullet, according to the Greenhill formula.

I have to stand corrected on the RE-7 comment. RE-7 gave excellent results in my 8.15 X 46R. I've never used it in the 6.5. Good example of why I write down my actual loads....my memory is not to be trusted!!! My son reports good results with RE-19 in his 6.5 Swede so I may give it a go.

Notwithstanding that some lighter bullets don't feed so well in some Model 1903 Mannlicher's, mine loads and shoots 140 grain Nosler partitions just fine. Also 129 grain Hornady spire points. The best bullets have been 159-grain Hornady round nose however. Lately I've been using 159 grain Cacarno bullets. I don't suggest you do this yourself unless you, (1) get a gunsmith to slug the bore and prove it is oversize and (2) get a Stoney-Point, (now Hornady) Overall Length Gauge and work out the right seating depth. It's nothing like the SAAMI overall length but much shorter. If you don't want to be bothered with this, just use regular .264 (6.5mm)bullets and accept a slight velocity decrease due to gas blow-by.

Post 1945 M.1903'a are probably .264" and pre-war would probably be oversize, but assume nothing until you've proven it with Cerrosafe.

My full-stocked carbine, BTW, shoots a tight group in 5-shot rapid fire just as well as 1-min spaced shots. No suggestion of walking the impact. Also, you may find some European 6.5mm bullets are undersize, not even .264". You can imagine what that does for velocity and accuracy. So break out the vernier and start measuring. If you want to use them anyway, you may need to turn down a spare expander button a thou or two, so the neck grips the smaller bullet. Don't mix up the 2 expanders, use a dab of paint on the stem to identify the smaller button.

Good luck.

The monolithic bullets are long for weight, which stabilizes well in the faster twists, but pressures should be kept LOW FOR THE PRE-1950 MS MODELS.

Thank you Kiwi! The bullet information is appreciated and the rest I've been doing for about 30 years. My vernier caliper lives on my bench and is used just about daily...I've never needed a gunsmith to slug a bore or make a chamber cast for me nor have I ever needed a tool to determine COAL. You are correct in that the COAL is not what SAAMI calls for and that it is considerably shorter. The Carcano bullets and bore of my M/S both mic at .266-.267. (mine was proofed in 1926 with a 140 gr. steel jacketed bullet). There was no difference in accuracy between the 140 gr SP and 160 gr. RN bullets.

What kind of accuracy are you getting from yours and what kind of sights at what range? With my old eyes behind the stock and open sights I'm getting fairly consistent 1" to 1 1/4" groups at 50 yards off a bench using front rest and rear butt bag. I'm beginning to believe that once everything is factored in that maybe I shouldn't expect any better than that.

Steve, I posted just behind you. I am using the Hornady Interlock 160 gr. RN at .266-.267 and the 140 gr. SP bullets were the Russian at .262-.263.

Vic
