dbadcraig,

Thanks for the photo of the barrel flats,I really like those old Greeners.
Steve has it nailed already,it was proved as a standard 12 bore, post 1887.If it were for thin brass cases that 13 would be an 11.The only thing special about a brass cased gun is rarity, and they are a bit more difficult to reload for.

Thanks Gents-

Steve- I will tell my brother to try the cellophane with the fore end off. I know he checked the wobble (for on face) with the fore end off, but I am fairly certain he had the fore end on when he did the cellophane test. If the left barrel is a bit less tight with the fore end on, it might likely prove to be a problem if tested the fore end off. Thanks for looking out for him!

R. Glenz-So I take it the shotgun is not quite as old as we first thought if it was proofed after 1887.

You could contact Greener for information about the date of manufacture and grade, but I wouldn't send them a copy of that picture. That may be too much for them to digest.

I am visiting my brother in NW Arkansas and I had a chance to get my hands on his Greener. It needs a little bit of work which he is willing to have done to it (barrels looked after and the action tightened). It is a very nice old gun, original 30” barrels original wood with a lot of burl to the butt stock and some nicely executed engraving and a double I think worth the extra TLC.

He is going to leave the original wood alone (with all of its “character”) other than to consider a leather recoil pad in lieu of the old red rubber one. The gun has a bit over 3" drop at the heel, so he is going to have to adjust his shooting style a bit.

On either side of the wrist there used to be deeply set diamond shaped inlays of some sort. Does anyone know what used to be inlayed in those spots (ivory, horn, ebony or precious metal)? Would you have a photograph you could share so that he might restore his?

I need to get my brother to join the forum so he can start asking these questions himself. I took some additional photos (see below) and I showed him how to post a message and photos. He is on his own now.

Thanks again one and all; we do appreciate your help-

Doug
