There's a datecode used by the Suhl proof facility post Sept. 1923. That will be one of the touchmarks. Kind Regards,

Oliver, Don't be too concerned about the resemblance to a Krieghoff, even some may say the forearm looks like a Merkel.Guns with special features were very often worked on outside the factory.Workmen often worked in a factory during the day and in his own shop during the night/weekend. Some may have been trained or work in one factory and work on special projects for another factory or gunsmith at night. This may seem odd, but they didn't like to stop production work for special features. This results in common features showing up on different makers guns. Also,if they didn't make a particular type action, they might buy raw actions and barrel bundles from another factory, for fitting in their own. This results in similar looking guns also.It would run even Raimey's computer crazy trying to figure all this out. Some can't be figured out. Mike

Hahaha. Yes, Having the 2 factories side by side surely eased production deadlines. Apparently the Rempts also bought some property from Krieghoff to allow for their factory expansion. The 2 firms must have had a close relationship with one another. I would be curious though to find out who was suppling the other. Seems like the Rempt brothers had a very good post war business going if they where buying land from thier neighbors. Phots below.. Top of barell with steel makers and "NITRO" UNDER BARREL>> not much there! INSIDE RECIEVER

Hide & watch Ford O ye of little faith. I don't think I'd need a Cray computer but I'm confident I could gain access to one. What I do have going for me is compensation & liability and that along with an optical correlator and computer will narrow the field greatly. May not get a specific craftsman but will get down to say 2 mechanics.
Kind Regards,

The datecode may be on the side and under the wood. I wonder if that lone S on the lower tube had a l that accompanied it or if it is for a S mechanic. Walter Steiner ran a Rohr Eisenkonstruktionen is Suhl and is almost always listed with the weapons makers. I don't think I've seen a WS so maybe he used a single S. His presence in Suhl and tube making without any real association/relationship has plagued me for a time.
Kind Regards,

so have my fotos helped, or deepened the mystery? What does the shield over crown, and "U" on the reciever stand for? The first "S" is stamped with a letter under it that looks like an angled "I" or a "T" very difficult to read..

What does the shield over crown, and "U" on the reciever stand for? The "eagle" and the crown/U marks are German proof marks, found on all receivers from 1893 to 1939. The U stands for Untersuchung = inspection for defects after firing the proof load.

Still baffled by the resemblance to a Krieghoff
The Suhl makers seem to have been fairly incestuous between the wars. Probably as a means of survival. It went on before that too. I have a pre WWI Collath that seems correct in every way except the name on it. Made for the trade I guess.
