Yes, that action is an ideal low budget base for a .416 Rigby. Go for it. Al Biesen built an outrageous .416 Rigby on a 1917 action for Jack O'Connor. That gun is kind of "Lost in Space". It was pictured in an O'Connor article years ago, but is missing from accounts of his collection in books that seem to include every other gun he ever owned. Those who are interested in such things, including me, can't even seem to locate the original article.

The P14 Enfield action was originally designed around a cartridge, the .276 Enfield, 3.23" long as compared to a 3.750" .416 Rigby, but yes, it can be shoe-horned in.

However, it's not ideal and with CZ 550's in .416 Rigby available at tempting prices, it's hard to see the economic logic behind that kind of conversion, unless you are able to do most of the work yourself. By the time you grind the ears off, profile the bridge, drill and tap, fit a trigger (with or without cock on opening), convert the magazine or purchase a new one, fit a barrel and sights and make a stock, by my reckoning you have at least the price of a used CZ invested.

As I recall, O'Connor's Enfield .416 was stocked straight, no Monte Carlo, thick through the grip and forend, of very plain looking straight grained English Walnut. Biesen scoped it in a low power Weaver K model, maybe even a K1. I don't know what mount he used. It was and probably is a great looking rifle that exudes "business". If someone comes up with the original article, we'll see how good my 45 year memory is. Roger Biesen probably still has pictures of the rifle in his files.

I had a buddy that built a couple of P17's in .416 Rem. As xausa commented after all the work it was quite the project. They were nice rifles when finished though. PacNor barrels, recontoured slicked up actions, stock blanks from Darcy Echols if I remember correctly. I use another variation..... a .416 Dakota....

This is a P14 project of mine from the early 1960's. The caliber is .416/.300 Winchester Magnum, a sort of precursor of the .416 Taylor, with slightly more case capacity. .416 Rigby performance was easy to obtain. Metal work by my friend and business partner, the late Harry Creighton, stock by the late, great Hal Hartley.

The O'Connor .416 is cataloged in Robert Anderson's book Jack O'Connor.

Enfield action, 24-inch Apex barrel, Biesen stocked, Weaver K2.5 in a G&H side mount. Weighed 10.5 pounds. Factory ammo was not readily available, so Jack made brass by turning the belts off .378 Weatherby cases and running them through the full-length sizing die.

Photo of it in the 2nd & 3rd editions of Jack's The Rifle Book.

Did Eleanor get her elephant with a 30-06 or a 7mm? I read that she dropped it in its tracks and the PH said "My God, Eleanor...you brained him!" Off topic but typical of her.
