The Lonetree Cabela's has been open a week here and the crowds are still big. Big boxes obviously still work for the masses. Fun to see (and very close for me) but.....

Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops etc. remind me of Home Depot. They all have thousands of square feet of stuff I either don't need or don't want and usually don't have what I do need.
I rarely venture into any of these places.

It's not just the big box stores. We have a local chain in So Cal, Turner's Outdoorsman, with stores that average maybe 4,000 to 5,000 sq ft, all hunting and fishing, nothing else. They opened a new store in Riverside County a few weeks ago and the crowds were so large on opening weekend that staff was handing out numbered tickets at the door to get customers into the queue for each department. Different tickets for different departments, one ticket for the gun counter, one ticket for ammo, one ticket for fishing tackle, etc. The cash register lines inside the store were so long that people were setting up folding chairs in the aisles to wait it out. When I left I told the guys at the door that even if they were giving away guns and ammo, it just wasn't worth the wait. Thanks, Obama.

Whoa, the "big box" stores are what they are. They do cater to us sportsmen. Would one rather have other types of stores take their place ? I remember the huge tide of orange shirts the day before pheasant opening in Mitchell , S.D. I am thankful we have them and the long lines give me hope that others are thankful, too.

CAB has been a great stock ( as well as RGR) over the last few years-even if you don't like them they can make you money.
another one to watch is BGFV(Big Five Sporting Goods),as they expand.

What Lloyd didn't tell ya was that we had two Cabela's open on the same day. One north of Denver off of I-25 & one south off I-25. Both were so busy the first day, the fire dept stopped letting people in, they would only let-in as many as came out.

We already have a large Bass Pro, two Gander mountain, two Sprotsman's Warehouse stores & now they are going to build two more Bass Pro's, one in Colorado Springs & one in Loveland.

Somewhere along the line something will have to give. Out of all of them I like Sportsman's the best. Good selection, easy in & out.

If you like everything being made in China, Cabelas is the place to go. Not for me. I'll find made in the USA in the smaller independent store or will do without.

I am glad we got a couple of Cabelas in Denver. They have huge selection of general sportings goods. One stop shopping to outfit most any trip.

Like dogon said, I like Sportsman's Wharehouse because they got good stuff without all the hoopla.

You chaps moaning about Cabela or Bass Pro make me smile. They are fantastic, we have nothing like that in Europe. I try to visit one each time when I visit the States but never take my wallet as I would be bankrupt in an hour. Only once did I, it was in North Carolina and I did $2000 in a few minutes on fly rods !! Some of you guys donīt know you have it so good. (My other favourite is the high street in Bozeman, Montana....paradise smile
