Unless something is escaping me here; there's wood on both sides of the action on shotguns. If you store yours muzzle down what to prevent extra oil from running from the action right into the forearm area? I don't have an ax to grind here and I honestly think storage just boils down to someone's personal preference. My preference is butt down and in over 50 years I've never had a problem with oil getting into a stock head. As I've stated before; I'm stingy with the oil and only use it for internal lubrication. The exteriors of my firearms are waxed. I do however think over lubricating is a potential problem no matter how they are stored. To give you an Arizona analogy; I don't worry about drowning in a dried out Wadi. However I'm out of one of these in a heartbeat when a Monsoon hits!  Jim

Just kidding, but if you didn't store guns muzzle up you wouldn't have any oil in the action to run into the forearm area when you go to storing them muzzle down.
See how silly this discussion is getting!
BTW I use a small amount of grease in the action so it doesn't run out either way the gun is stored.

I recently sprayed some Rem Oil (not a ton) into the action of a Pre-64 Model 12 that is practically new and it really smoothed up the action. Was this a stupid thing to do JR? No, it was brilliant. Spray some more in it. JR No John, not all of your belittling and condescending statements are directed at me, but this one clearly was. I guess practically everyone on this board is a dumbass but you, eh. Buzz, I generally suffer fools poorly, of which there are very few here, and I certainly do not think you are one. My apologies for my smartass reply. As for your question regarding dumbasses, that one is on you. JR

What is laughable to me is the worry over the slight bumping into each other in a safe. My gosh!, these are tools made to be used. They are far more likely to be damaged in use than they ever are being placed, or removed from, a safe. Maybe some who drink excessively and bangs them around doing so would have a a problem, but nobody with reasonable coordination is going to damage a shotgun or rifle this way.
If it is so valuable and perfect that one cannot bear the thought of the gun actually touching another one in a safe it should never be used in the field or on the range. Wrap it in bubble wrap and build a separate box to keep it in, and for goodness sake don't ever shoot it.
