Well, I'm back home and needless to say, as luck would have it, we arrived in Frankfurt Germany to coincide with the WARMEST WEATHER IN GERMANY, IN 40 YEARS! Jim Kromka and I, [Jim being formerly of GRIFFIN AND HOWE now Outfits and Sells FINE FIREARMS under the banner, Kromka Sporting Adventures [kromkasportingadventures.com] We hunted every day and saw game, with me taking nothing as I am a strict Trophy Hunter only. The warm weather suppressed the movement of a lot of the game [Red Stag et.al.], with the temperature being in the mid to high 80's, up until 10:30 P.M. when we came off the "high stands". We visited Jena the Home of Carl Zeiss, WUNDERKIND of the optics industry and Goethe and Schiller the poets, but sad to say no Zeiss "factory seconds store" or "closeouts", as was to be expected. The Suhl WAFFENFABRIK MUSEUM is second to none, for you lovers of GERMAN SINGLE SHOTS AND TARGET RIFLES! IT HAS TO BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED!
HOWEVER, THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN OF THIS TRIP WAS THE FACTORY OF CUSTOM GUNMAKER DR. [That's right...the only person in the world with a P.H.D. in COLOR CASE HARDENING!]Jorg Schilling.[email to: schilling@schilling-beschichtungen.de website at schilling-beschichtungen.de .Now normally, when someone in the shooting industry has a P.H.D. in anything, I run in the opposite direction...fast!!!!!!! However Jorg is a Gunmaker and Hunter, First! He very simply was a Merkel Plant Supervising Engineer who saw a need for a 3 YEAR scientific study in the qualities of different steels and the processes on them, that constitute Color Case Hardening. He speaks about 5 different languages and if that was not enough, when you buy an upgraded ITALIAN OR SPANISH BEST SHOTGUN [AND SOME ENGLISH] WITH COLOR CASE HARDENING FROM THE TOP MAKERS AND I MEAN ALL OF THEM,YOU ARE GETTING THE COLOR CASE HARDENING OF JORG SCHILLING! Jorge does great work. He has my friend Jim Wear build those oak and leather cases. Last year he came to visit Jim and I had hoped to meet him while he was here. I missed him but hope to meet him sometime in the future. Lovely case colors to be sure.

All I can say is "stunning."

In addition to the spectacular case coloring take a gander at the forend and butt stock on the cased single shot rifle. Turkish Walnut?

Here is an excerpt from a 2003 Shotgun World article "Peer review: The Krieghoff Essencia"

"Rounding out the team of German experts working on the Krieghoff Essencia is J�rg Schilling and his firm Schilling Spezialbeschichtungen GmbH. J�rg worked with scientists at the University of Chicago to develop a 20th century approach to the traditional bone-and-charcoal method of the case hardened finish on the Krieghoff Essencia"

He learned a lot from Oscar...many did.

Dr. gaddy also said that Schilling tried to get in to see Turnbull, but he was turned away

If this is fact, it seems to me that Turnbull would have been the greater beneficiary of an exchange of methods and ideas with Herr Schilling.

Alvin Linden, you say that Schilling has a Ph.D in Case Hardening. I didn't realize there is such a thing, but if his doctorate is in an area of metallurgy confined to Case Hardening, is it possible that some of his research and techniques have been published? His papers would almost certainly answer a lot of the questions we frequently ask here. Thanks for sharing those pictures.
