Wasn't sure if to post this here or in for sale section, but I see this Remington 1889 on Gunbroker is getting a lot of bids

Beautiful SxS until you get to picture #17 where is shows the barrels have been cut and then soldered. Thought someone might want to know.

SxS only

I don't doubt what you say about the barrels, but what is the tip off? The cross cuts in the solder? Very Nice looking gun.

The barrels don't touch at muzzle (Remington double's touch)The keels are missing, The rib is to high at muzzle (as you cut barrels the rib gets higher at muzzle) A uncut Remington top rib will be as low as you can get it at muzzle. Barrels were F & F when it left the factory, can't be F&F now.

The seller admits it has 26" bbls,,and that his info says Remington only offered them in 28 and 30.
It's his opinion that they are original and perhaps special order length.
It's still his gun.

The tubes not quite touching could be an indication of a cut,,but it's not a 100% rule, maybe it is here..
I don't know if the high grade Remingtons were routinely cross hatched at the muzzle or not. It's certainly not a big deal to re-create if needed.

Lacking any other photo evidence,,A carefull measurement of the lengths of the choke bore(s) and with that info a conversation w/someone familiar with Remingtons of this period most likely give up the answer to the question.

Remington sxs barrels do touch if uncut and the keels on this gun have been replaced with solder and then design cut with a blade. This gun started life with 28" barrels. Hurts the value to someone who knows what to look for and not to those who don't, until they go to resell it.

The seller of this Remington 1889 grade 3 is like alot of people on this BBS, he thinks the barrels are uncut. The seller stated to me that the barrels are uncut because the barrels are engraved between the barrels at the muzzle. I have been collecting and a gunsmith on Remington doubles for over 40 year's. Remington barrels will touch at the muzzle and have keels in place. The barrels are CUT.

That photo #17 is upside down for a reason. It creates the illusion that the rib is low but your eye is drawn to what is really the bottom rib not the top one. Spin that picture around and it looks like you could drive a truck under that rib. Not right at all IMO.

Apparently a consignment gun ... nice to see that the dealer posted about the experts' cut barrels feedback and offers bidders the option to back out.

The rib on this 30" 1889 sure doesn't look any higher than the discussed gun and if the muzzles measure .705 like he says and the barrels have been cut then it had verrrry long chokes. American gun makers back in the day would do what ever you ordered. Plus I have doubles with lower ribs at the muzzle than my 1894 or 1900.
