I heard it was changed to meet safely rules as it had a carcinogen in it. If it had phenol in there (and I don't doubt you are right), that would might explain it, though the carcinogen evidence against phenol seems pretty weak.

For the totally nasty crust of ages I use the aerosol disc brake cleaner. METAL ONLY! It'll eat any wood finish. And plastic.

And recently I've re-discovered kerosene as a universal cleaner. The gallon cans at the depot are way cheap, has no smell of consequence, and it evaporates quickly enough to be handy but not so quick as to be useless. Even makes for a good soak for too long assembled actions.

have a day

Not really a "bore solvent" I guess but I use Beretta gun oil for the outside of the barrels and then use it on the inside of the barrels as well.

After my Youngs 303 posting I then started to remember some of the product smells from my childhood directly after WW2 that have been changed or disappeared for ever that where based on Coal Tar. Top of my list are two Coal Tar Soaps Wrights and Pears and a Phenol based soap Lifebuoy, with Vosene Hair shampoo which is still around but does not have the same smell. I am intrigued to know if there where any US versions of the now frowned upon Coal Tar household products.

I'm with Chuck and use Rem Oil for cleaning the bores.
It is much more solvent than lubricant and seems to work as well as anything.
At least I'm sure that it does no harm.
No way would I put a bore solvent that must be neutralized with oil after application on one of my doubles!

Favored bore solvent? Hoppes No.9, the vintage stuff with the nitrobenzene formulation, because it works for 98% of barrel cleaning, and the smell is pure heaven. I don't know what they use in the newer version, but it's not the same. However, what's best depends upon the situation. We don't deal with leading much anymore since most shells use plastic shot cup wads. Heavy plastic deposits from quick successive shooting in a hot bore will require something capable of dissolving plastic. I like Mercury Quicksilver which is sold at Mercury outboard dealers for dissolving gunk in engines. It is cheaper per ounce than any plastic dissolving bore cleaner and works as well or better. It will leave the metal dry after it evaporates and should be promptly followed by gun oil. Any of the volitile organic solvent cleaners should be kept off of the skin and used in a ventilated area. Even the old Hoppes. But I like to think it's like good bourbon... a little won't hurt ya.

I've been using Shooter's Choice for years. I started using it to clean rifles but found it really good for cleaning bores of a shotgun. Sure hope I'm not damaging my shotguns by using it??

yeah, I have to admit I've been unfaithful to Hoppe's #9 on occasion over the years in favor of Shooter's Choice. Well, as long as I'm coming clean, there was a stretch where I used cleanzoil.
