I think the 57s and 97s and 197s are all very similar.

And if anybody else has 57 primers i've figured out how to use them in standard hulls. I've shot up 2K and my buddy has shot upwards of 5K. JW

Could you please explain how you converted #57 size primer pockets to #209 size pockets?

It was about 40 years ago but I believe that I used a .250 piece of drill rod polished down to about .240 and long enough to just protrude from the primer loading station with the bottom tool removed. The front of the rod was rounded and slightly tapered for about an 1/8 inch. After polishing the rod was hardened. I was young and broke then so I know the most complex tool involved was a mic. and a hand drill. To use I placed a deprimed hull on the top priming tool, held the rod under the primer pocket and pulled the 600 JR's handle down far enough to clear the base wad.

I would be interested in knowing 12brd's method of using the #57 primers in the 209 pocket. To use the 209 primer in a 57 pocket on the old paper shells simply required swaging the pocket up. I knew one man years ago who simply bought the 209 size & primed all his shells, irregardless of brand, with them. His press pushed them in & apparently he never had a problem with this method.
To do it the other way around requires either Reducing the pocket or bushing up the primer.

Where does your friend in Maine live? Everyone now and then 57 size primers show up at the Kittery Trading Post when someone turns them in for store credit.

The way to use 209 primers in 57 size hulls is rather simple. Push out the spent 57 primer. Put a spent 209 size primer in the reloader and push down, it will go in harder than normal but with not a lot more effort. Then deprime the hull again and seat a new 209 primer.

I would like to know what 12brd's method of using 57 primers in 209 sized shells is. Perhaps it's something like putting a piece of tape around the primer.
