Thanks, that helps a little bit more. But, still I would like to see a diagram of the outside of what most people refer to as a 7 pin sidelock action (either back action or bar action) as most that I know always seen to have at least 8 exposed pins and 9 if you count the tumbler axle.Is the axle counted as pin? The English gunsmith that I took my sidelock to this weekend counted it as a pin to come up with a nine pin sidelock in his definition.

Guess I am dense when it comes to these pins but I bet there are other readers just as confused as I am.

Yep, and the next gunsmith you show your gun to will say, “It’s not a nine pin lock it’s a seven pin lock” Like when you go to buy the ever controversial 45 Colt, some will say “There’s no such thing as a 45 Long Colt it’s a 45 Colt” or “Well, which one do you want the 45 Long Colt or the 45 Colt ACP” It’s all in who you talk too and if that certain someone had their wheaties pissed in that morning.

I hope this helps.

OK, hear is what I think I know. The main difference is a couple of more pins for the intercepting sears. Below is a Charles Hellis 9 or 7 pin lock, depending on whether you count the striker pivot and the mainspring pin. There are 8 pins showing (counting the striker pivot); the mainspring pin is on the front of the bar and not showing.

I can put markers on the pins if questions remain.

IMO, the extra value of the 9 pin lock is whatever value you personally place on intercepting sears.

Don, I agree and the Hellis in your photo exemplifies the typical Holland and Holland style lock. There were several lock makers and some locks are more complicated than the Holland style lock. For example, Boss and Purdey locks are functionally similar to the Holland lock, but maybe a little more complex and the pins are situated in a different fashion/location. I think quail hunter is 'thinking' too much on the subject, which I did too at one point, and over complicating this topic.

Wouldn’t intercepting sears be the top tier in the hammerless safety design? Has anyone performed testing to show how much stronger intercepting sears are to other designs of hammerless safeties?

On the premise thus far, someone count the pins on this Roblin?

More pins = more/higher quality?

I believe it comes down to pins, pegs & axels. I'd start with Purdey and transition to H&H.

I guess it’s all in what you or someone else would consider a pin or an axel or a peg. Or call them all the same, a pin and you're right Raimey there is ten showing.

But one is the end of the screw from the other side. It is perspective based on the component arrangement.
