I took my first whack at reloading some paper hulls over the weekend for my Lefever. 16ga. Federal Monark purple paper, with paper basewad (I found a couple dozen once-fired ones at the trap range). 1oz., W209, 23grs. Longshot, sg16 wad, about 7k psi and 1250 fps. What most impressed me was the crimp. The waxy paper makes an incredible tightly sealed crimp, much better than the plastic Federals I've been using. Best yet, they have less internal capacity than the Fed plastic, so I don't have to add puffed wheat to fill up space. Really a wonderful, tight load, with no shot "rattle" going on inside.

Has anyone ordered any of the paper hulls from Grafs? I think I'm definitely a paper convert.

If you use the internally smooth crimp starter, they will come out better than one with folds inside. MEC has them.

Just wondering if the FPS and PSI are correct. I ordered a couple 1000 of the Cheddite Paper hulls. I was thinking if starting with this same load, except using 22 grs. Longshot. I will be sending my loads to Tom for testing.

Dave, I extrapolated the data from the hodgon Longshot website, but I reduced the load from their 26.5 gr/7,700 psi/1350fps recipe (with Federal plastic hull). My figures are definitely a guess, and I will send the load to Tom as well before I can verify them as anywhere near accurate. I'm hoping paper hulls don't increase pressure significantly over plastic, but proper testing will answer that. If I'm erring, I'm trying to do so on the side of caution. I think your idea of starting with 22grs. Longshot sounds about perfect as well. In fact, since I haven't yet ordered the Cheddite hulls, I should just let you continue with your testing if you would share the results, before I go any further.

Mark, it's my understanding that the paper hull should have a decrease in PSI over plastic. I haven't received my hulls yet. I have a couple different loads I'll be sending to Tom, based on my existing low pressure loads. My guns are Damascus, so I try and stay around 7200 PSI. I will share load data, no problem.

Be careful with extrapolating data and the assumption that paper hull have less pressure. Most paper hulls have less capacity due to a taller basewad than a plastic hull. This less capacity could contribute to higher pressure. Trust only real data from believeable sources and you'll stay safe.

If you guys are into developing your own loads from scratch and want pressure data, the Pressure Trace device is a great tool along with a chronograph.

As I stated in my post, all loads will be sent to Tom Armbrust for testing. I have some new cheddite paper hulls in 12 gauge. They have a plastic base wad, just like the cheddite plastic hull. I filled the 12 gauge plastice hull with water, poured it into the paper hull. It was a 1/16" shy of filling the hull. Thus, I'm assuming it has larger internal capacity. I will test the 16 gauge hulls the same way, prior to loading. But, thanks for the info and advice. All is appreciated.
