Of course you can shoot 16/70 Brenneke, as with all old guns you only should be sure there is no damage to the barrels!
Just stumbled upon this lovely old german Drilling, made by:
HONOLD, ULM !!!!
Hope your french is not too bad....! ;-)
Best Regards, Gunwolf Gunwolf, did you intend to provide a website link? TexasJack

I have a few more photos to post as follows. These are additional markings inside the action when broken from the barrel. 3 photos. 2nd and 3rd are cropped from the first and enlarged. These show the 16141 SN on the action (as expected), and the Crown-over U which means ______, and one other proof mark symbol which means ______? HELP! TexasJack In the following photograph, note "D.R.P." under the action. What might these letters stand for? An Owner's initials?

One further note. I don't think the rifle trigger is a set trigger. It will not push forward.

Further to the "D.R.P." question above, see this link, which discusses another Merkel gun with these initials: http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/57/lid/1670Might this be the engraver's initials? Here is the text from this link: This is a beautiful engraved example of a Merkel over/under shotgun. The left side has deep relief engraving of a male auerhuhn in a tree overlooking a meadow with three hens, and mountains in the background. The right side has three rabbits running through a wooded draw. The tangs, bolsters, forearm hardware, sides of the barrel at the breech and underside of the receiver have pine cones and coniferous branches. The underlug has the initials "D.R.P." and there is a sling swivel on the bottom of the barrel. There are cocking indicators on each side plate, a tang mounted safety and a barrel selector on the right side of the single trigger. The underside of barrel is marked "544" indicating manufacture in May of 1944, and also has the matching serial number, "BOHLER STEEL" and "eagle/N" proof mark. The front sight is a white bead, barrels are choked extra full/extra full and 2 3/4 inch chambers with lengthened forcing cones and ejectors. Mounted on a nicely figured, multi-point checkered three-piece walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with horn grip cap, raised cheekpiece, rear sling swivel and checkered horn buttplate. Length of pull is 14 3/8 inches. With a leather bound takedown hardcase with brass corner protectors lined in green felt with an Abercrombie & Fitch label inside. TexasJack

Texasjack, indeed I wanted to post a link, forgot it! I'm on a 4day holidays trip, will post it later. The D.R.P means: "Deutsches Reichs Patent" and probably refers to the "Weichlot" as Raimey mentioned before! It's no initials of anyone.
Best Regards, Gunwolf

To the Set Trigger: No surprise, think it must have been found on the Gun Card otherwise. Compare the Gun Card of Max Schmeling in the Merkel Stammbuch!

Best Regards, Gunwolf Thanks Gunwolf. Does "Weichlot" translate in English to "soft solder"? If not, what? TexasJack

I am having trouble finding a 16 gauge slug that is (1) not magnum and (2) not a "rifled" slug and (3) not "made for rifled slug barrels." I need an old fashioned slug that is made for smooth bore barrels, right? Or, can I safely shoot any 16 gauge non magnum slug, including "rifled slugs," in this smooth bore barrel? What brand/model slug available in the USA do you recommend?
